2016 Australian Oaks First Acceptances Feature Jameka

Ciaron Maher’s Crown Oaks winner Jameka is one of the headline first acceptances taken by Racing NSW this week for the Australian Oaks 2016 at Royal Randwick on April 9.

Held on Day 2 of Sydney’s ‘The Championships’, this season’s $1 million Group 1 James Boags Premium Australian Oaks (2400m) originally drew 119 nominations.

There are now just 56 three-year-old fillies vying for a spot in the capacity 14-starter Australian Oaks field including Jameka who shoots for the VRC Oaks – ATC Oaks double during her three-year-old season.

She has had two runs this time in, both in Melbourne, the daughter of Myboycharlie last seen running a credible fifth to Palentino when taking on the boys in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington.

Jameka sits top of the pre-field Australian Oaks odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $7, equal with Risque who also ran in the Australian Guineas finishing only a half-length third over the mile.

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Kiwi import won her Australian debut prior to that in Caulfield’s Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) and is a Group 1 winner back in NZ having won the 1000 Guineas last November.

Lindsay Park’s Hayes & Dabernig have a total of three Australian Oaks first acceptors with Risque joined by High Chaparral filly Sacred Eye and the stable’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) winner from the spring Stay With Me.

Stay With Me is an $11 Australian Oaks hope after she ran two lengths away fourth to Le Romain in last weekend’s Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) at the track, but she is yet to step out further than a mile over her 10 start career.

Also paying $11 in all-in Australian Oaks betting this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival are the John O’Shea-trained Ambience and Honesta for John Thompson.

Street Cry filly Ambience won the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day last season before her Crown Oaks third and returned on February 27 when second last crossing eighth to undefeated stablemate Ghisoni in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m).

O’Shea and Godolphin also paid the ATC Oaks first acceptance fee for Teofilo filly Asinara and Seltzer who are both as yet untested in black-type company.

Honesta was a perennial runner-up in the spring placing second four times on the trot including in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick and Flemington’s Crown Oaks over further.

She ran first-up in the Surround Stakes also but was unplaced when sixth in her third start at Randwick.

Other early fancies for the Australian Oaks this season include the Stephen Marsh-trained New Zealand raider Sofia Rosa ($13) who has won four from eight to date and who has previous Sydney race experience, and Sailing By ($15) for Caulfield horseman Mick Price.
