Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Darren Weir’s smart six-year-old Signoff is the headline nominee for the Adelaide Cup 2016 heading the entries, weights and early betting markets for the Morphettville two mile classic next Monday.
A total of 25 stayers make up the nominations for this season’s $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m), including two from the Melbourne Cup winning stables of Weir.
Heading the Adelaide Cup weights allocated 59kg is Authorized gelding Signoff who is undefeated at the Morphettville track.
Fourth in his only other 3200m run behind upset winner and stablemate Prince Of Penzance in last November’s Group 1 Melbourne Cup, Signoff was last seen winning the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) over the weekend.
He blitzed his rivals carrying 57kg to an impressive six and a half length win as the odds-on favourite in the traditional Adelaide Cup lead-up.
Now he shoots for the double in the Group 2 on Monday, March 14, and he pays around $2.30 in futures Adelaide Cup betting at bookies around the country.
He is followed in the weights and all-in Adelaide Cup odds by stablemate Real Love (55.5kg) who is hot on his heels in the early markets.
Formerly prepared in Perth, the five-year-old Desert King mare also won her last start over 2600m defeating Dandy Gent by a more conservative quarter-length in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) on the weekend.
This followed a third in Moonee Valley’s Listed Torney Cup (2500m) from February 19, a race stablemate Signoff finished second to Swacadelic in.
Third in this January’s Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m), Real Love is yet to be tested over the two miles or run in Adelaide.
The third heaviest weighted Adelaide Cup nominee this autumn is the local Richard Jolly-trained Kushadasi (54.5kg) who is out to atone for a Lord Reims seventh.
A winner of six of his 14 starts at the track, Jolly’s Choisir gelding’s last win was in the Rain Lover Stakes (1800m) carrying 58.5kg back in early February.
Following the Lord Reims Stakes form, the other best past the post were runner-up Celtic Prince and third placegetter Tunes who are also both nominated to take on Signoff again in next week’s Group 2.
Murray Bridge horseman Grant Young prepares O’Reilly six-year-old Celtic Prince who was $151 roughie in the Lord Reims and who gets in on the 53kg minimum in the Adelaide Cup rematch.
While he hasn’t won since November last year, he does have two mile form having run second to the now Chris Waller-trained Who Shot Thebarman in the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) in March of 2014.
Tunes is also a Young-trained stayer who comes off a string of top three runs.
The veteran Viscount seven-year-old hasn’t finished out of the money since New Year’s Day at Flemington and has a strong Morphettville record of two wins, three seconds and a third from seven starts at the track.
It is Dee I Cee however who is rated the best Adelaide Cup hope outside of Weir’s duo.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Sydney raider is currently 21st on the Adelaide Cup ballot order, the race having a field limit of 20 starters.
A lightweight hope in the feature, the four-year-old hasn’t run in Group company down under, only back in New Zealand.
He was fourth to Murray Baker’s subsequent Caulfield Cup (2015) winner Mongolian Khan in last year’s Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) and was last seen finishing second over the same distance in Sydney on February 27.
The other best fancied hopes in the mix for next Monday are the Tony McEvoy-trained Last Wish (53kg) coming off a Moonee Valley 2500m win and Aaron Purcell’s Warrnambool-trained Swacadelic (53.5kg) who won the aforementioned Torney Cup.
