Savoureux’s Wenona Girl Handicap win gives Kris Lees a winning double

Trainer Kris Lees was able to wrap up a memorable day with tough mare Savoureux collecting the second leg of a winning double for the stable in taking out the Group 3 $150,000 CHI-X Australia Wenona Girl Handicap (1200m) at Randwick today.

The Lees trained Le Romain had earlier in the day caused a major upset when he downed the odds on favourite Press Statement in the Group 1 $1m Girvan Waugh Randwick Guineas (1600m).

And winning rider Tommy Berry was also able to complete a winning double after taking out the previous event, the Group 2 $500,000 Hyland Race Colours Challenge Stakes (1000m), on the Gai Waterhouse trained English.

Savoureux has been racing fairly consistently of late with a win and a last start third from her last three starts and Lees said that the Nadeem mare deserved her win today.

“She put the writing on the wall the other day, it was a very good run,” Lees said.

“Tommy in his own words probably errored, got too far out of her ground, but he rode her very good today. She was ready to pounce when the run came. She was very strong late.”

Savoureux was sent out at the good odds of $11 and had three quarters of a length to spare from runner up Private Secretary ($6) who made up a heap of ground from the back.

James MacDonald set the pace on the $3.90 favourite Flashing Speed who battled on to fill third spot, one length from the winner.

While Savoureux has won at distances further than today’s races, Lees said that the 1200m was her ideal trip.

“She have won over 1300m but I think 1200m in this quality of race when there is good genuine tempo is ideal for her,” Lees said.
