2016 Randwick Guineas Field: Press Statement Draws Wide

The early Chris Waller-trained favourite Press Statement has suffered a wide barrier draw for his shot at a third Group 1 win in Saturday’s Randwick Guineas 2016 in Sydney, but the gate isn’t as bad as it reads.

The Hinchinbrook colt will jump from gate 12 of 13 in the $1 million Group 1 Girvan Waugh Randwick Guineas (1600m), the set weights classic due to run as Randwick Race 7 at 4:10pm (AEDT).

Waller’s $1.5 million earner is a dual Group 1 champion over the distance having jumped from barrier 10 of 12 to win last winter’s JJ Atkins in Brisbane and barrier 14 of 16 to take out the Caulfield Guineas in the spring by one and three quarter lengths.

His only run since that Melbourne triumph was a first-up victory in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) on February 20 at Rosehill where he and last year’s Randwick Guineas winning jockey Hugh Bowman, who retains the ride this weekend, blitzed a quality field by over two lengths as the odds-on favourite.

Press Statement is set to jump favourite again leading Randwick Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for this weekend where he will look to become the third horse in the past five years to win from barrier 12.

The first was Robert Smerdon’s class filly Mosheen (12 of 14 in 2012) before the Peter Moody-trained Dissident got the job done from the same barrier with the same number of starters in the Randwick Guineas field of 2014.

At the opposite end of the scale, last year’s Randwick Guineas winner Hallowed Crown had the inside alley in a small six-starter field and barrier one belongs this season to the Luke Price-trained Man Of Choice.

The son of Manhattan Rain ran a competitive third to Vanbrugh in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at the Randwick track last October before crossing second last when walking home 39 lengths off the winner in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).

He was also worse than mid-field first-up at Rosehill over 1350m from February 20, a run he’s tipped to improve on getting up to a mile.

Victoria Derby winning trainer Michael Moroney has one runner in the Randwick Guineas line-up on Saturday with Tulsa taking on the field in Sydney while stablemate Tivaci runs at home in the $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne.

Tulsa jumps from barrier six with Steven Arnold in the saddle of the Sebring gelding in place of Ben Melham with the horse coming off a third to Tivaci in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago.

The Hobartville Stakes is the form race to follow into the Randwick Guineas having produced five of the past six winners of the Group 1 including Dissident (2014) and Hallowed Crown (2015) who both completed the double Press Statement shoots for this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Also coming out of the Hobartville Stakes and running in the Randwick Guineas on Saturday are runner-up Le Romain and third placed Montaigne.

The in-form Kris Lees-trained son of Hard Spun Le Romain was also runner-up two runs back in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) and so looks on track to step up out over a mile for the first time in the Guineas from barrier eight with Christian Reith retaining the ride.

Anthony Cummings prepares the lightly-raced Montaigne who has just his fifth start this weekend after making his black-type debut for the brave Hobartville Stakes third.

Also coming off a good lead-up run is the sole filly taking on the boys in this year’s Randwick Guineas, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Stay With Me.

Jumping from barrier five with Glyn Schofield aboard on the weekend, the Group 1 Thousand Guineas winner over the Caulfield mile in the spring comes off a third to the undefeated Ghisoni in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick only last weekend.

She is on the short back-up but is proven over the mile, is a Group 1 winner and is looking to become the first filly since Mosheen four years ago to win the Randwick Guineas.
