Racing Victoria received 19 nominations for this season’s $150,000 Group 3 TAB Rewards Stakes (1400m), one of two Group 3 support races in Melbourne this Saturday.

The handicap clash includes two possible runners for Melbourne Cup winning trainer Weir who has entered former NZ Derby winner Puccini after his first win since a Group 1 in New Zealand last January and Burning Front.

Primus gelding Burning Front has won his past two on the trot including the Croup 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) over the Caulfield mile on February 13.

He won that by one and three quarter lengths and will be chasing back-to-back Group 3 wins if accepted into the Rewards Stakes field this Saturday.

The only other last start winner in the mix is the Pat Carey-trained Dan Zephyer, the Danbird five-year-old coming off a trio of 1400m wins in Melbourne.

Allocated the 59kg top weight in the Rewards Stakes this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Entirely Platinum.

It has been a long time between drinks for the Pentire six-year-old who hasn’t won since a Rosehill success back in August of 2014.

He has placed in multiple Group 1 races since however when runner-up in last year’s CF Orr Stakes, second to the recently retired Boban in the Memsie Stakes and third to Fawkner in the Makybe Diva Stakes over the mile.

His latest run was a ninth beaten five lengths by Turn Me Loose in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) just last weekend that he’ll be out to improve on should he run on the short back-up into the Group 3.

Team Hawkes have also nominated for Leebaz (58.5kg) who follows in the Rewards Stakes weights, the fellow six-year-old gelding second-up after a Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) fifth to Winx three weeks ago.

Gerald Ryan has his All American four-year-old Bachman in the mix nominated for his Flemington debut after crossing eighth from a wide gate last time out in January’s Magic Millions Cup on the Gold Coast behind Lucky Hussler.

Also eighth last time out behind boom filly Heatherly in the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) from February 13 is the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Tried And Tired.

The Corstens have a total of three nominees with Zebrinz up in class and General Groove coming off a third to Dan Zephyr from early February.

Other notable Rewards Stakes hopes include the Mick Price-trained Mighty Like who won January’s Listed Barton Stakes (1400m) defeating Tried And Tired at Caulfield and Chester Manifold Stakes winning Strategic stallion Tudor.
