Capitalist Dominates 2016 Todman Stakes Nominations

One time Golden Slipper Stakes favourite Capitalist dominates the diminutive nominations taken for the Todman Stakes 2016 in Sydney this Saturday on Randwick Guineas Day.

Two races on the Randwick Racecourse card this weekend off a ballot exemption to the winner into the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) held at Rosehill on March 19.

For the two-year-old colts and geldings that race is the $300,000 Group 2 UNSW Todman Stakes (1200m), formerly the Todman Slipper Trial.

The set weights clash attracted only six early entries with nominations extended by Racing NSW until 11am (AEDT) on Tuesday.

Of the current hopefuls the shortest-priced in futures Golden Slipper betting at is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Capitalist.

The undefeated son of Written Tycoon has won all three of his career starts to date, the latest of which was the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 9.

He was knocked off top spot in the all-in Golden Slipper Stakes odds by the Mick Price-trained Blue Diamond winner Extreme Choice ($4) last weekend and is now at $4.50 to win the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.

Four of the other five early Todman Stakes nominations are also yet to taste defeat including $11 hope for the Group 1 Astern.

Prepared by John O’Shea for Godolphin the Medaglia D’Oro colt is a two time winner from as many starts including the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on February 20.

He jumped the odds-on favourite that day and saluted for the punters by a half-length, form he will look to carry on this Saturday back at Randwick where he won over 1000m by two and a half lengths on debut in December.

O’Shea has also nominated for fellow dual winning Medaglia D’Oro colt Tessera who won at Randwick on January 16 and then saluted on a Heavy (8) Rosehill track a fortnight later in the Group 3 Canonbruy Stakes (1100m).

Also under $20 to win the Golden Slipper at a current quote of $17 is Weatherly prepared by Scone horseman Paul Messara.

The Beneteau colt is yet to race in Sydney after two career runs in Melbourne, the latest on February 20 down the Flemington straight for a tidy win from a wide barrier (14 of 15) in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m).

Rounding out the current Todman Stakes entries are then Jason McLachlan’s Dieters and Kiss And Make Up for Gai Waterhouse.

McLachlan prepared 2009 Golden Slipper Stakes winner Phelan Ready and has Written Tycoon colt Dieters on the path this year following two spring – summer wins in Brisbane last time in.

Kiss And Make Up meanwhile represents the most successful Golden Slipper Stakes winning trainer in recent history with Waterhouse boasting seven wins in the classic.

She has prepared three of the past four Golden Slipper winners including Vancouver (2015) last year who completed the Todman Stakes – Golden Slipper Stakes double.
