Extreme Choice blitzed the field to win 2016 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes

Brilliant colt Extreme Choice blitzed his rivals to win the 2016 Group 1 $1.5m Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield today.

Coming off a wide barrier in the sixteen horse field, winning jockey Craig Newitt was able to settle Extreme Choice in fourth spot down the side of the track.

Approaching the home turn, Extreme Choice was travelling that well that Newitt had to let him slide up outside of the leaders before he pushed the accelerator button which saw the $2.70 favourite hold a comfortable one and three quarter lengths winning break to the line.

It was a triumph for winning trainer Mick Price who also saddled up the runner up Flying Artie ($5) who had a tough run after jumping from barrier seventeen.

The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig trained filly Zamzam ($26) ran on nicely to be a distance third.

Damien Oliver had no choice but to go back to near the tail of the field on backmarker Flying Artie and he also put up a terrific performance, finishing hard down the middle of the track after being forced the widest runner on the home turn.

“They are two good colts,” Price said.

“I saw the second horse get speared off at the top of the straight. I thought poor bugger he just had no luck.”

“All credit to Extreme Choice because today was the day he had an opportunity to really stand up.”

Today’s Blue Diamond Stakes win with Extreme Choice was the second for Price and Newitt who combined to win Melbourne’s feature two year old race with Samaready in 2012.

Price now has his sights set on the Group 1 $3.5m Longines Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 19 with both colts, but will have to decide if connections of Flying Artie are willing to pay the late entry fee of $150,000 in gain a start in the world’s richest two year old.

“We have three weeks and probably have to pay a late entry fee for Flying Artie to get into the Slipper,” Price said.

“But apart from Capitalist, it is a very even year this year so we have to just construct a plan to get them into Sydney.”

“I saw that little horse (Extreme Choice) when he hit the line like he did, there is no doubt about 1200m and just stamped him as a really really good colt.”
