The John O’Shea-trained Australian Cup bound Bow Creek has opened favourite to break his maiden status down under in the Peter Young Stakes 2016 at Caulfield Racecourse on the weekend.
The imported son of Shamardal has had three runs down under but chases his first win on Blue Diamond Stakes Day in the $200,000 Group 2 Crown Golden Ale Peter Young Stakes (1800m) on Saturday.
Due to run as Caulfield Race 5 at 3:25pm (local) the weight-for-age clash is a lead-up to the $1 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 12 and Bow Creek is favourite for both races through Ladbrokes.com.au.
In the Peter Young Stakes he jumps from barrier nine with Damien Oliver booked for the ride and is at a quote of $4 to atone for his first-up 13th to Suavito in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m).
The extra metres are set to suit and Bow Creek had a luckless run first-up, but was still only beaten around three lengths so he is a big danger on Saturday.
Four other runners are under $10 in the latest Peter Young Stakes odds including Fenway ($6.50) who is drawn well in barrier five for her second-up run of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.
Mark Zahra partners the Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Zabeel mare, the four-year-old best known for her Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) win in Sydney last March.
She was also runner-up in the SA Oaks last year and second in the spring’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington.
Her resuming run was a CF Orr ninth, and while she is yet to finish in the money from three previous Caulfield assignments, the bookies are taking no chances on Fenway who can improve second-up.
Occupying the third line of betting at $7.50 is the widely-drawn Fawkner out in barrier 13 of 14 for jockey Nicholas Hall to overcome.
Robert Hickmott’s multiple Group 1 winning eight-year-old is a veteran chasing his first turf triumph since September’s Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
He boasts two wins and two seconds from six Caulfield starts to date and is another CF Orr Stakes graduate looking to improve on his 14th when beaten only four lengths from another wide alley.
Rounding out the single figure Peter Young Stakes hopes are fellow $7.50 chance He Or She who Dwayne Dunn partners from a better barrier four draw and Rising Romance ($8) out in 11.
David Hayes & Tom Dabernig prepare five-year-old He Or She who ran fifth to this weekend’s 2016 Futurity Stakes favourite Turn Me Loose in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) back in November.
He returned on February 6 with a narrow second over the 1400m at Caulfield and is after his first win over further than a mile here.
Stablemate Rising Romance won the 2014 ATC Oaks, but has been first past the post just once since.
That said she has mixed with the best and more than held her own including a second in the 2014 Caulfield Cup, 2015 Makybe Diva Stakes and Mackinnon Stakes.
At more generous odds and after the upset are the likes of 58-start warhorse Happy Trails ($11), early market mover Our Ivanhowe ($14) who ran third in last year’s Caulfield Cup and last start Sandown Cup winner over two miles Almoonqith ($14).
