Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Darren Weir’s red hot colt Mahuta is the headline nomination taken on Monday by Racing Victoria for the Caulfield Autumn Classic 2016 on Blue Diamond Stakes Day this Saturday, February 27.
The three-year-old son of Flying Spur is undefeated since Weir put the blinkers on him back in October last year, Mahuta winning his past six starts on the trot including three Group status races.
After success in the lucrative $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) on the Gold Coast first-up last month he travelled to Caulfield on February 13 and narrowly defeated smart filly Sailing By in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m).
He is now nominated to return to the track where he has won both his previous starts this weekend to attempt to extend his winning streak in the $200,000 Group 2 Caulfield Autumn Classic (1800m).
Mahuta is also nominated to back up on March 5 at Flemington in the $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) and pays $6.50 as the early third favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au in all-in markets for that top level clash.
Weir has also nominated for his Shaft filly Powderworks in the Caulfield Autumn Classic on Saturday that will be her first black-type start if accepted.
The other notable last start winners nominated for the race include the consistent David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Flying Light coming off a Moonee Valley victory last month, Street Cry colt Tally for Godolphin’s John O’Shea and Top Ravine prepared by Mick Price.
Sydney’s Chris Waller has thrown his Makfi colt Hursley into the mix, the black-type winner at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day last November out to atone for a first-up seventh at Warwick Farm over 1400m on February 10.
Also looking to return to stakes winning form is the Shawn Mathrick-trained Nicconi gelding Ayers Rock from Cranbourne who beat home Tivaci in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) last October.
He is unplaced in his three subsequent runs but out to improve and further frank the form out of the UCI Stakes after Tivaci won last Saturday’s Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m).
Geelong Classic winner Extra Choice was second last to Mahuta first-up in the Autumn Stakes and looking to close the gap on Saturday, as is Price’s seventh-placed O’Reilly gelding out of the same lead-up Celtic Tiger.
Other notable hopes include Autumn Stakes sixth-placed Hardern and the Peter Moody-trained Last Typhoon who has winning form over 2000m in easier company.
The official Caulfield Autumn Classic 2016 field and barriers are due out on Wednesday morning so stay tuned.
