Gai Waterhouse’s undefeated filly Scarlet Rain is the headline nomination for Saturday’s Sweet Embrace Stakes 2016 at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.
A traditional lead-up to the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 19, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Les Johnson Memorial Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) attracted 19 two-year-old fillies at nomination stage on Monday.
Of those searching for the 2016 Golden Slipper Stakes ballot exemption, the shortest in futures betting for next month’s Group 1 is Manhattan Rain filly Scarlet Rain.
She pays $17 in the latest all-in Golden Slipper Stakes odds through Ladbrokes.com.au having won both of her career starts to date.
She won over 1100m at Rosehill on debut in early January before her last start victory on a Heavy (8) Randwick track on January 23 over 1000m,
Saturday is her first look at 1200m and black-type company, but she is sure to be well fancied to keep the winning streak going.
At $26, In The Vanguard is the other best fancied Golden Slipper-bound filly nominated for the Sweet Embrace Stakes this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Prepared by John Sargent, the daughter of Encosta De Lago debuted on February at Canterbury and enjoyed an easy two and a half-length win over 1100m that she is out to repeat on the weekend.
Also on the Golden Slipper Stakes path are the likes of Twist Tops ($34) and Overstep ($41).
Newcastle’s Kris Lees trains Beneteau filly Twist Tops who has had four runs to date for one win and and a second.
The victory was on February 6 at Randwick in the lucrative $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m) where she had a quarter-length to spare over Soviet Secret.
She has had one stakes run to date when fourth to Calliope on debut in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) last October at Royal Randwick.
Overstep is an unraced daughter of Exceed And Excel trained by Peter Moody who caught the eye at the Cranbourne trials on February 8 with her four and a half-length romp over 800m leading into her debut run.
The other fillies with a previous win on the record are the David Payne-trained French Fern, Joe Pride’s Foxwedge filly Kentucky Miss, Quick Feet for Peter & Paul Snowden who is out to atone for her Blue Diamond Prelude seventh last start, the Gerald Ryan-trained Tale Of Choice and Sugarparma.
Peter Robl trains Snitzel filly Sugarparma who won at the Gold Coast in December before a fourth at the same track on Boxing Day in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m).
She ran fourth again last time out in her first Sydney run when taking on the boys in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) won by Telperion who is nominated for the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) this weekend.
Other noteworthy Sweet Embrace Stakes nominees include the John O’Shea-trained Group 3 placed daughter of Lonhro Gloriette, her up-and-coming stablemate Palomino, Lonhro Plate third placed Hinchinbrook filly Spright and Group 3 Widden Stakes runner-up Smart Amelia.
