Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Smart grey mare Catkins has opened top of the Millie Fox Stakes 2016 odds this Saturday at Rosehill Gardens to go back-to-back in the Silver Slipper Stakes Day showdown.
The now six-year-old Chris Waller-trained daughter of Dubawi won the $175,000 Group 2 Galmet Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival and defends her title first-up on the weekend.
Waller won the fillies-and-mares’ feature with Red Tracer (2011-13) before taking it out for a fourth year with Catkins 12 months ago and looks a big chance of continuing his domination in the set weights plus penalties event.
A final field of just seven face off in the race this weekend and Catkins, drawn in barrier four with last year’s winning hoop Hugh Bowman aboard, is paying $2.15 through Ladbrokes.com.au to take it out.
She is drifting in Millie Fox Stakes betting out from an earlier odds-on quote of $1.80 however not having raced since her ninth to La Passe in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup Day last October.
Catkins did enjoy a half-length Warwick Farm trial win over 1100m on February 8 leading up to her return however and boasts an excellent record of seven wins and a second from nine previous first-up wins.
She is also undefeated over the track and distance so ticks plenty of boxes for the weekend.
There are two other single figure hopes in the latest Millie Fox Stakes odds with close second favourite being the returning First Seal ($3) in gate three with Blake Shinn to ride.
John Thompson welcomes back to the races his 2014 Flight Stakes winner, the now four-year-old Fastnet Rock mare returning from a lengthy break.
Her last start was at Randwick in April during last season’s ‘The Championships’ when she crossed eighth to Amanpour in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).
From three Rosehill runs she has run second three times and by all reports is going great guns since recovering from surgery to remove bone chips.
The only other hope under $10 to take it out is then the rails-drawn I’ve Got The Looks ($6.50) jumping from barrier one with Brenton Avdulla aboard.
Representing Peter & Paul Snowden, the six-year-old Choisir mare had her last run at the start of the month running a very close third just a quarter length off the winner Amicus in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m).
Catkins won the Breeders’ Classic ahead of her 2014 Millie Fox success, and the form could again stack up this autumn.
At more generous odds but not without claims are the likes of early market mover Press Report ($21 into $14) who has been smashed by the punters and Waller’s ATC Cup winning Mossman five-year-old Telepathic ($12).
Lee Curtis prepares Written Tycoon four-year-old Press Report locally, the classy chestnut coming off a Breeders’ Classic second.
She is drawn ideally in gate two this Saturday, was defeated only a nostril flare first-up, has won two-from-four second up to date and could be the value punt in the field.
