This Saturday in Melbourne the CS Hayes Stakes 2016 features a class field of Australian Guineas types, betting odds and tips for the Flemington showdown detailed below.
There are a dozen three-year-old colts and geldings facing off in this year’s $150,000 Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m), which runs as Race 6 at 3:25pm (local) on Black Caviar Lightning Day.
Leading the latest CS Hayes Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au and one of the top fancies for next month’s $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) back at the track is the Darren Weir-trained Palentino.
The early market mover for Saturday backed in from $3.80 to $3.20, the Teofilo colt is out to improve on an unlucky seventh in the Group 3 Manfred takes (1200m) first-up at Caulfield earlier in the month.
Palentino was caught-up for a run that day and is out to atone and return to form at Flemington where he won the Listed Hilton Hotel Stakes (1400m) on Emirates Stakes Day in the spring.
Four other runners are under $10 for the CS Hayes Stakes win on Saturday including $6 co-second favourites Ready For Victory and River Wild.
The Mick Price-trained More Than Ready colt Ready For Victory is second-up off a Manfred Stakes third when beaten only a length, the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) placegetter set to improve over the extra metres this weekend.
River Wild gets the inside run from barrier one, Damien Oliver aboard the Fastnet Rock colt prepared by Gai Waterhouse who prepared last Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival’s CS Hayes Stakes – Australian Guineas double winner Wandjina.
The other single figure fancies are Caulfield Guineas runner-up in the spring Lizard Island ($9) first-up in gate four and last start Pakenham Park winner Tivaci ($8) for Michael Moroney.
So will the favourites be first past he post or is there value tipping an upset CS Hayes Stakes result in Melbourne on Saturday?
#5 Ready For Victory ($6)
Think Ready For Victory can win this second-up after he also had little luck for third in the Manfred Stakes first-up. While he is yet to win over further than 1000m, his Caulfield Guineas third when beaten two lengths over the mile last October showed he could handle more distance. It has been while between drinks for this galloper who hasn’t won since his successful Festival Stakes (1000m) debut last March. He has class though and with the right run he can charge home for the upset with Craig Newitt in the saddle.
#6 River Wild ($6)
Waterhouse won this race 12 months ago with subsequent Australian Guineas winner Wandjina and has another livewire hope to win the first leg of the double this Saturday. River Wild gets the inside alley, Oliver is an experienced hoop and the colt’s lead-up form is strong. He won over 1200m at Randwick then 1400m at Rosehill narrowly in January and earned this step up in class. The distance is right and he drops from 61kg last start to 56kg for Saturday, a big advantage.
#7 Lizard Island ($9)
Sebring colt Lizard Island is drawn nicely in barrier four for his race return, the Pat Hyland-trained young gun last seen running a distant eighth in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m). Before that he was runner-up in both the Caulfield Guineas and the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) and he has twice run second from three Flemington runs. His two other 1400m assignments also both produced second places, and he impressed with a Cranbourne trial win at the start of the month so looks ready to run well fresh.
