2016 Millie Fox Stakes Field Features Catkins

This Saturday at Rosehill Gardens ace horseman Chris Waller will shoot for his fifth consecutive Millie Fox Stakes victory with the defending champion Catkins joined in the small field by two other stablemates.

One of three Group 2 races on the Silver Slipper Stakes Day card, this season’s $175,000 Galment Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) is due to run as Rosehill Race 5 at 3:05pm (local).

The fillies-and-mares’ only clash has attracted just seven runners this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, three representing Waller who has won the past four editions of the race.

He prepared triple champion Red Tracer (2012-14) before Catkins (2015) took it out 12 months ago, the latter back to defend her title this weekend.

Drawn in gate four with last year’s winning hoop Hugh Bowman back aboard the Dubawi grey, six-year-old Catkins is first-up on the weekend having last been seen running ninth in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield back in October.

She won the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill first-up however for the second year in a row and has a gun Rosehill record she is out to continue on the weekend kicking off her autumn preparation.

Waller’s other two 2016 Millie Fox Stakes hopes this season are Telepathic and Ballet Suite drawn in barriers five and six respectively.

Former Kiwi galloper Telepathic is a five-year-old daughter of Mossman coming off a January run in the Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) where she ran fourth.

She shoots for her first win since taking out the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill last November and is likely to improve later in the autumn when stepped out over more distance.

Ballet Suite has Tim Clark aboard in the weekend for her resuming run, the four-year-old High Chaparral mare not having won since last winter in Brisbane.

In gate three carrying the 58kg top weight under the set weights plus penalties conditions of the Millie Fox is the John Thompson-trained Group 1 winner First Seal.

Thompson’s Fastnet Rock four-year-old has won four of her 11 career starts to date, her latest success being in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm.

Her winning hoop in that run Blake Shinn is back aboard on Saturday, First Seal best known for her Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) win in 2014.

She has run second in three subsequent Group 1 races including two at Rosehill in the Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), also during her 2014 campaign, with her last start producing a Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) sixth at Randwick last April.

Peter & Paul Snowden’s runner I’ve Got The Looks gets the inside run from barrier one in this year’s Mille Fox, the Choisir six-year-old coming off a third to Amicus in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) that Catkins won last year on way to her Millie Fox success.

The other top Breeders’ Classic graduate backing up in Saturday’s showdown is the Lee Curtis-trained Written Tycoon four-year-old Press Report who was beaten a nose first-up and who jumps from gate two.

Rounding out the field in the outside barrier (7) is then the Anthony Cummings-trained Skyline Blush, the daughter of ill-fated sire Northern Meteor chasing her sixth win at start number 13 and running for the first time since a fifth in Randwick’s Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) in the spring.
