Co-trainer Peter Snowden is confident spruik colt Defcon can get his autumn campaign back on track with a good showing at Rosehill Gardens in this weekend’s 2016 Silver Slipper Stakes.
On debut the Choisir colt finished a good second to Tessera in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) on a Heavy (8) Rosehill track on January 30.
He was surprise scratching from last weekend’s Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) after inconsistent bloodwork came back.
Snowden is happy with the chestnut’s progress since however and his fourth to Hayman in a 900m trial at Rosehill on Monday.
“All is in order, I trialled him yesterday to be sure of that and he’s come through the trial nicely so looking forward to Saturday,” Snowden told Racenet.
“I’m really happy with how he’s going.
“Physically and mentally he’s as close as I’m going to get him. He should present in good order on Saturday.”
The Silver Slipper Stakes attracted 13 original nominations, Defcon the headline entry along with the John O’Shea-trained Astern who pays $11 in futures betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on March 19.
Snowden will confirm a 2016 Golden Slipper bid for Defcon if the colt returns in good order in the Silver Slipper Stakes, two of the past four winners of which have gone on to win the Group 1 with Pierro (2012) and Mossfun (2014).
Snowden has saddled-up 12 previous Golden Slipper runners for one win, two seconds and a third.
His victory in the world’s richest race for juveniles was with former star colt turned sire Sepoy in 2011 who came off a second in the Group 2 Todman Stakes.
“He does (need to win), he does,” Snowden said of Defcon in the Silver Slipper.
“No doubt with a bit of luck and a good draw, he’ll be competitive on Saturday.
“I want to see him take up a forward spot, relax well and we’ll try and use that turn of foot he has at the right time of the race, hoping it’s good enough to get him home.”
Brenton Avdulla rode Defcon on debut last month, but his trial jockey from Monday Blake Shinn has the ride on Saturday.
“Blake (Shinn) knows the horse inside out so it’s important for him to be there. He knows his strengths and I’m sure he’ll ride him to those on Saturday,” Snowden added.
Defcon’s stablemate Capitalist leads early Golden Slipper Stakes betting at $3.80, the undefeated Written Tycoon colt having won all three of his career starts to date.
His latest was at the Gold Coast on January 9 when flying home by two and a half lengths in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) with Shinn in the saddle.
