A Crown – Tiara double this campaign is on the...
Sydney horseman Chris Waller will shoot for his fifth straight Millie Fox Stakes success this Saturday at Rosehill Racecourse nominating for four of his best mares in the Hobartville Stakes Day feature.
Waller prepared triple winner Red Tracer (2012-14) before his smart grey Catkins (15) won last year’s edition of the $175,000 Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m).
This Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival Waller again dominates the set weights plus penalties event for fillies and mares with four of the nine current entries.
Millie Fox Stakes nominations are extended until 11am (AEDT) on Tuesday, but of the original nominees the highest rated is the defending champion Catkins.
The now six-year-old daughter of Dubai is looking to repeat the feat of Red Tracer and win multiple editions of the race to continue her undefeated record at the track and distance.
Her last win was in the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill last September before two unplaced runs she’ll be out to atone for first-up.
She flies fresh boasting seven wins and a second from nine previous first-up runs and looked ready to add to that imposing record with a winning 1100m Warwick Farm trial at the start of the month.
Also first-up for Waller in the race if accepted for is High Chaparral four-year-old Ballet Suite, third in the same trial that produces Catkins, who hasn’t won a race since last May in Brisbane.
Waller’s chances are rounded out this year by former New Zealand-trained Mossman five-year-old Telepathic whose last run was a fourth in January’s Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) and Amicus.
A four-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock, Amicus shoots for back-to-back wins this time in after her narrow first-up success in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) at Randwick on February 6 with Hugh Bowman aboard.
Also coming out of a smart run in the Breeders’ Classic this year are the Lee Curtis-trained runner-up Press Report and third placed I’ve Got The Looks for Peter & Paul Snowden.
Written Tycoon four-year-old Press Report looked back in form when just nosed out of the Group 2, the former top three-year-old having run fourth in both the 2014 Flight Stakes and 2014 Spring Champion Stakes.
One of the class mares in the mix meanwhile is First Seal for John Thompson, the Fastnet Rock four-year-old returning to racing this weekend.
Best known for her Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) win in October of 2014, she was runner-up in the Spring Champion that year and chases her first victory since last February’s Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m).
She finished second to Plucky Belle in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) last March and was runner-up to Fenway in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) before her Queen Of The Turf Stakes sixth last time out.
It has been nearly a year between runs then, but Thompson is hoping the mare can return to her best after the lengthy rest.
Rounding out the entries are the Anthony Cummings-trained Skyline Blush and Hussonet mare Zarzali for James Cummings who ran fourth to subsequent Cox Plate winner Winx in last year’s Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Domben in the winter.
