One of the key support races on the card, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) has attracted 16 three-year-old colts and geldings at nomination stage led in the ratings by Sebring colt Lizard Island.

A winner of just one of his nine starts to date, the galloper was runner-up to Press Statement in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) last October and his latest run was a distant eighth to Tarzino in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).

He won a lead-up trial defeating Scissor Kick over 990m at Cranbourne earlier in the month and kicks off if accepted into the CS Hayes Stakes field over a distance he has twice run second from two previous starts over.

The CS Hayes Stakes is a traditional lead-up to the $750,000 Group 1 Autumn Guineas (1600m) back at the track on March 5 and the CS Hayes – Autumn Guineas double was achieved 12 months ago by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Wandjina (2015).

Currently Lizard Island pays $26 in futures Australian Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.

The shortest-priced CS Hayes Stakes nominee in the all-in betting meanwhile is Palentino for Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir.

A winner of two of his four starts to date including a Melbourne Cup Carnival black-type over 1400m at Flemington last November, Teofilo colt Palentino is at $6 to win the Australian Guineas.

He raced first-up in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 6 finishing a luckless seventh to Puritan and is out to atone with a better run this weekend.

Mick Price has two gallopers in the mix with Prince Of Brooklyn and $21 Australian Guineas hope Ready For Victory racing second-up on Saturday.

The nicely-bred More Than Ready colt was third in the Caulfield Guineas before dropping in distance for his Coolmore Stud Stakes ninth over 1200m and ran a good third in the Manfred first-up.

Last year’s winning trainer Waterhouse has another $21 Guineas hope in the CS Hayes mix this weekend with the in-form River Wild.

A son of Fastnet Rock, the colt won back-to-back Sydney races in January over 1200m and 1400m respectively ahead of his step up in class this weekend where he runs in Melbourne for the first time.

Also at $21 to win next month’s Australian Guineas and nominated for Saturday’s lead-up are the likes of the Michael Moroney-trained High Chaparral colt Tivaci, stablemate Tulsa looking to improve on a Manfred Stakes eighth when beaten three lengths last start and Vostock.

Peter Moody leads the CS Hayes Stakes nominations numbers-wise this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival with four entries including Vostok, the Starcraft gelding coming off a fourth in the Manfred.

A winner of his three previous runs, he was beaten under two lengths in his maiden black-type start and will take great improvement off the run heading into the CS Hayes Stakes.

Moody’s other nominees are last start Mornington winner Cool Chap, the returning Artie Schiller gelding El Greco who has form around Lizard Island and Group 3 winning Reward For Effort colt Gold Symphony.
