Doomben 10,000 winner English could be racing...
A host of Randwick Guineas-bound three-year-olds are nominated for the Hobartville Stakes 2016 at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday in Sydney including Chris Waller’s returning Caulfield Guineas winner Press Statement.
A bumper 19 three-year-olds are nominated for this season’s $400,000 Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) including five for master Sydney horseman Waller.
The top-rated of the early entries is Hinchinbrook colt Press Statement, a dual Group 1 winner over the mile who kicks off his Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign.
Waller resisted the urge to bring the $1.27 million earner back early with a run in Caulfield’s Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) last Saturday, and keeps the colt on a Sydney-only autumn bid this season.
He heads towards the $1 million Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 5.
Last year Hallowed Crown (2015) won the Hobartville Stakes – Randwick Guineas double, which Press Statement will look to win the first leg of this weekend in his first run since taking out Melbourne’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) last October.
Another Group 1 returning star for Waller in the Hobartville this autumn is classy Encosta De Lago colt Vanbrugh whose last start produced a win in Randwick’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on October 10.
Waller has also nominated for his Pins colt Torgersen, former New Zealand-trained Dubaiinstyle and Counterattack.
Redoute’s Choice colt Counterattack was third to stablemate Japonisme back on Victoria Derby Day in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington and ran third again first-up at Randwick on February 6 in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m).
Eskimo Prince Stakes winner Spill The Beans and runner-up Le Romain are also both nominated for a Hobartville Stakes rematch on the weekend.
Gerald Ryan prepares the progressive Spill The Beans who could target the $2.5 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick during April’s The Championships later in the autumn.
The Snitzel colt has won three from six to date and had nearly two lengths to spare on his closest rival first-up winning the Eskimo Prince Stakes.
Second past the post in that race, the Kris Lees-trained Hard Spun gelding Le Romain is yet to finish out of the money in his five career starts, his only black-type assignment so far being the Eskimo Prince Stakes.
Adding interest to the Hobartville this season is the Murray Baker-trained New Zealand entry Dal Cielo, the Per Incanto colt last seen running second to Mahuta in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) last November.
2016 Australian Guineas-bound Mahuta has since franked the Sandown Guineas form going on to win his two subsequent runs including the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) last weekend.
Godolphin and John O’Shea are represented by another returning galloper, Etymology, who hasn’t raced since his second to Tarzino in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2400m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
He is joined in Saturday’s possible runners by stablemates Shards and Tarquin who ran fourth and 11th (last) respectively in the Eskimo Prince Stakes.
