There are only six juveniles left in the mix for this season’s $125,000 Listed Huawei Lonhro Plate (1100m) after two withdrawals from the field.

The early scratchings are the promising Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Quick Feet (2) who instead runs in Melbourne’s $200,000 Group 2 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield and the unraced Team Hawkes-trained Northern Meteor colt Palladian (8).

A nice lead-up for possible $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) types later in the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the Lonrho Plate is led in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au this year by Prized Icon ($2.20).

Jumping from barrier two with one of the best hoops in the business Hugh Bowman aboard, this progressive More Than Ready colt has had two runs to date for two third place finishes.

The first was at Randwick last October behind subsequent Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner and current Golden Slipper favourite Capitalist in the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m).

He then returned for a second Randwick run on January 23 when only a length and a half off Scarlet Rain on a Heavy (8) track over 1000m.

Looking fitter for the run, he looks in a prime position to break his maiden status stepping up to 1100m.

The other best fancied in the mix are the early market mover Telperion ($3.60 into $3) for John O’Shea who has form around highly-spruiked filly Yankee Rose and the rails-drawn Spright ($4.60) out to improve on a sixth on debut at Rosehill last month in the Group 3 Widen Stakes (1100m).

So do the bookies have it right or is there value further down the Lonhro Plate markets in the likes of Peter Robl’s Group 3 BJ McLachlan Plate fourth placed Snitzel filly Sugarparma ($9) or even the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vienna Waltz ($12) who comes off a Canterbury win over 1200m in the wet?

#1 Prized Icon ($2.20)

James Cummings saddles-up the deserving favourite who is ready to strike and breakthrough for his maiden win at start number three. The Breeders Plate form (3rd) from the spring has more than stacked up, and he’ll strip fitter for the resuming third at the track in the wet. Will get firmer going, more distance and Bowman stays on. All that plus only five rivals to defeat from a gun gate.

#6 Sugarprama ($3)

Godolphin-raced Street Cry colt has had just the one run when third as the beaten favourite at Rosehill in late October behind Yankee Rose, subsequent Golden Gift winner who is on track for the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes later in the autumn. Aided by James McDonald being aboard and has trialled nicely at the track.
