Betting markets are now open on Saturday’s Kevin Hayes Stakes 2016 at Caulfield Racecourse where the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Kiwi import Risque and market mover Mossin’ Around are equal favourites to win the three-years-old fillies’ sprint.
Running as Caulfield Race 2 at 2:00pm (AEDT) on a bumper nine-race CF Orr Stakes Day card in Melbourne, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) has attracted nine runners.
Sitting top of the Kevin Hayes Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.90 each are Risque and Mossin’ Around both drawn ideally in barriers two and three respectively.
Having her first run down under is the talented Lindsay Park-raced Darci Brahma filly Risque who was last seen winning the Group 1 NZ Thousand Guineas (1600m) back in mid-November.
She comes into Saturday’s clash, where Damian Lane has the ride, without an official trial in Australia but her elite level win back in New Zealand plus a sharp jump out leading up to the Kevin Hayes has her well-backed.
The genuine Kevin Hayes Stakes market mover though is the consistent John Thompson-trained daughter of Mossman, Mossin’ Around having her first run at Caulfield.
She won at Canterbury on debut in mid-December before two seconds down the Flemington straight in January.
The latest was behind Hellbent in the lucrative Inglis Dash (1100m) and she is back against her own kind here with Mark Zahra back in the saddle.
Outside the co-favourites the other top fancies are Hawkes Racing’s Fastnet Rock filly Cana ($5) who didn’t appreciate a Soft Randwick track when sixth to Cannyescent on Australia Day and the John O’Shea-trained daughter of Lonhro Calaverite ($8) who is a black-type winner and Group 2 performed.
So will the favourites win or is there an upset Kevin Hayes Stakes result pending the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival?
#5 Mossin’ Around ($2.90)
She is the market mover and we’re happy to follow the money trail here after her brave recent runs at Flemington. She took on the boys last time out and was only beaten a length over 1100m, and will appreciate getting back up to the 1200m for this, which she won her debut over at Canterbury. It’s a small field and she always runs an honest race, so if Caulfield suits she can get the job done.
#1 Calaverite ($8)
Godolphin’s runner has the outside barrier, but can be forgive for her credible sixth to Choose at Moonee Valley over this distance against the older mares last start. This is her first Caulfield run but she’s a black-type winner in Melbourne over 1200m from last autumn and has been tested in tougher company. She will lift for this.
#2 Risque ($2.90)
If this New Zealand Group 1 winner can bring her Kiwi form to Oz, she’s the one to beat. She is drawn to win in barrier two and was doing everything right before coming over to join Hayes & Dabernig. She hasn’t officially trialled but a recent jumpout showed she was going pretty well.
