The card closer in Melbourne on Saturday and the last of eight Group races on a nine race CF Orr Stakes Day card is the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes 2016, betting odds and tips for the mares’ feature detailed below.
Drawn in gate nine for star hoop Damien Oliver, the Ciaron Maher-trained Shinko King four-year-old is first-up running for the first time since her brave third when under a length off Politeness in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Derby Day.
That followed a string of other consistent runs, the mare only lightly raced with nine starts of which she has only finished out of the money once.
She has been readied for this with a Cranbourne trial on February 8 when fourth to Group 1 winner Mourinho and she is undefeated first-up with three wins from as many previous starts when resuming.
Following the first-up flyer in Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes betting this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival are three other single figure hopes including dual Group 3 runner-up last campaign in Melbourne during the spring Wawail and the Darren Weir-trained Christmas Stakes winner on Boxing Day at the track Tuscan Sling both at $4.80.
So will one of the first three in the markets win or is there value further down betting from the likes of early mover Shakespearean Lass ($9.50 into $8) who has won three of her past four starts including the Listed W.J. Adams Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield earlier in the month, Lee & Shannon Hope’s Starcarft mare Choose ($10) coming off a first-up Moonee Valley win or Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes fourth placegetter last May in Adelaide Miss Steele ($11) drawn a treat second-up in barrier three?
#9 Azkadellia ($2.60)
Deserving Maher-trained favourite, this locally-trained four-year-old was in flying form over the spring including her third in the Myer Classic and on the back of a solid trial only a week ago, she looks ready to get the job done again and retain her flawless first-up record (3-3-0-0). The Group 1 Myer Classic run was luckless and many claim she was the beaten winner, so if she comes back good again she’ll be very hard to beat.
#1 Wawail ($4.80)
Plenty of boxes ticked by Damian Lane’s mount, Lonhro mare Wawail boasting a consistent record over her 11 starts to date (11-5-2-2) and she also runs her best fresh (4-3-0-0). Her latest run was a Group 3 third on Melbourne Cup Day over 1400m at Flemington, and she also has winning form at this distance. Her draw sees her box seat from barrier two and she should have plenty left for a sharp finish.
#4 Shakespearean Lass ($8)
Pat Carey trains this Mornington-based daughter of Written Tycoon who comes off a black-type win over 1000m at the track earlier in the month. It was a narrow victory there, and her third form four starts dating back to December. She is in top form and will enjoy getting up to 1200m having won two from three over the distance to date. Just needs a touch of luck from the gate (eight).
