Eight of the nine races on the Caulfield card this Saturday for CF Orr Stakes Day hold Group status including the Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude 2016, betting tips for the Ladbrokes-sponsored race detailed below.
A traditional lead-up to the $1.5 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 27, this season’s $200,000 Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (1100m) features 13 young hopefuls.
Leading the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au on the two-years-old set weights sprint is the John O’Shea-trained daughter of Exceed And Excel Calliope ($2.90).
She jumps from barrier five this weekend with Steven Arnold aboard first-up in her maiden run since a nearly two length win on debut at Randwick in last October’s Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m).
Following Calliope in the Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude betting markets is the widely-drawn Sword Of Light ($6.50) shooting for her third win from as many starts from the outside barrier (13).
So will the two shortest-priced in the markets get the job done or is there value tipping an upset on way to the end-of-month Group 1 classic with Group 3 Flemington winner Concealer ($8),the rails-drawn Blue Diamond Fillies preview winner Dream First ($9.50) and even the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained daughter of Northern Meteor Quick Feet ($16) all boasting claims?
#11 Dream First ($9.50)
Going for the upset Blue Diamond Prelude tip and say Dream First can take out the Preview – Prelude double from her inside barrier one draw on Saturday. The Leon & Troy Crostens-trained daughter of Dream Forward had nearly two lengths to spare on her closest rival on debut last month so the step up in distance shouldn’t present a problem. She needs to get away well from the barriers, but if she does that she can win again at good odds.
#2 Concealer ($8)
Adelaide’s Tony McEvoy prepares this Nicconi filly who did everything right at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day for her half-length Group 3 win. She is first-up here from barrier eight, Mark Zahra riding, and her latest jumpout showed she was ready to fire fresh again. She’ll need a touch of luck and cover from the gate, but if she gets that she’ll be hard to hold out.
#3 Calliope ($2.90)
Godolphin-raced filly is from the right stable and is the deserving favourite after her nearly two length black-type win in Sydney on debut. She needs to bring that brilliance to Melbourne now but she is a big hope having improved over her time in the paddock and is at a short price for the 2016 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes based on her class and raw ability.
