The Autumn Stakes 2016 featuring a classy field of Australian Guineas-bound three-year-olds runs at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend on CF Orr Stakes Day, betting tips for the clash found below.
Due to jump at 4:00pm (AEDT) as Caulfield Race 6, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Hyland Race Colours Autumn Stakes (1400m) is down to 11 runners after the early scratching of the Chris Waller-trained Vanbrugh (4) who is being saved for the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) Saturday week at Rosehill.
Current favourite at $3 and early Autumn Stakes betting market mover is the consistent John O’Shea-trained Holler, the Commands colt after another win following his Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) success at Moonee Valley first-up.
The next best following closely in the latest Autumn Stakes odds at $3.20 is the rails-drawn Mahuta for Darren Weir.
Brad Rawiller stays on the Flying Spur colt who has won his past five on the trot including the lucrative Magic Millions 3YO Guineas at the Gold Coast last month.
He has won his only other Caulfield assignment and is undefeated with three previous runs over Saturday’s distance.
The other top fancies at more generous prices including Mick Price’s classy filly Sailing By ($8) who is first-up in gate two and stablemate Tarzino ($8.50) in his first run since the Group 1 VRC Derby (2500m) success during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
So will the two top fancies fight it out in the finish or is there an upset Autumn Stakes result on the cards?
#1 Mahuta ($3.20)
Mahuta’s red hot streak and the inside barrier are too hard to ignore here. He’ll get the run of the race from the barrier with Rawiller aboard again shooting for his sixth win on the trot. He has had one run for one black-type win at Caulfield when beating home Holler by a quarter-length on Caulfield Cup Day in the spring and with Weir he’s been thriving.
#4 Holler ($3)
Obvious favourite with money coming, should prove a top rival to Mahuta after the pair ran the Gothic Stakes quinella last October. Won the Group 2 Australia Stakes against the older horses first-up and should only improve off that stepping back to his own age here. Is drawn wider than Mahuta so will need a bit of luck going forward, but D. Oliver is aboard and can win the race on his skill alone.
#12 Sailing By ($8)
Big wrap on Price’s filly who will get things her way from barrier two. She doesn’t know how to run a bad race and has run third twice from her two previous first-up runs. Form around top Group 1 fillies in the spring and blitzed her Geelong trial over 1200m at the start of the month with a three length win to bring her on for the autumn.
