Amorino Leads 2016 T.S. Carlyon Cup Field

Archie Alexander’s Group 1 performer Amorino will look to return to form with a first-up run at Caulfield Racecourse on CF Orr Stakes Day in the T.S. Carlyon Cup 2016 in Melbourne.

Set to run as Caulfield Race 8 at 5:00pm (AEST), this season’s $150,000 Group 3 The Cup Club T.S. Carlyon Cup (1600m) has attracted a final field of a dozen milers.

To wear the number one saddlecloth and drawn the rails with barrier one is Snitzel six-year-old Amorino, the multiple stakes winner shooting for his first win since the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) at the track last April.

His spring netted little returns, but his 11th to Stratum Star in September’s Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) was better than it looked on paper.

He was beaten under three lengths in that elite level Caulfield feature before a first-up at the same track and distance on January 26, beaten the same margin again.

He will strip fitter this weekend and should get a soft run, also getting in well weight-wise under the set weights and penalties conditions.

Sydney’s Gerald Ryan saddles-up to TS Carlyon Cup hopes this year with Dances On Stars and Red Excitement drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers three and 12 respectively.

Damien Oliver has the ride on Dances On Stars, another six-year-old son of Snitzel, who comes off good summer lead-up runs.

Two back the gelding was runner-up to Cradle Me in Randwick’s Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) on Boxing Day before his fourth to Tudor at Flemington in mid-January in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m).

Stablemate Red Excitement and jockey Blake Shinn may have the outside alley on Saturday, but the Excites gelding still has genuine claims.

He hasn’t raced at Caulfield before, but has won two of his three starts over the distance.

His latest run was in Sydney on January 23 when fifth of five runners in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m), but he should improve off that failing to really let down on the Heavy (8) track.

Extra Zero adds class to the line-up, the rising 10-year-old veteran still going seven years on from his Victoria Derby second to Monaco Consul back in 2009.

Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir has in-form Primus five-year-old Burning Front up in class after a string of really honest runs.

The horse hasn’t finished worse than third in his six most recent runs going back to last November, including a third to Charmed Harmony in the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m).

His latest start produced a Moonee Valley win last month over 1514m and so the mile should suit.

Weir’s other runner is imported six-year-old Manndawi whose last start was also his Australian race debut when third to Almoonqith in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) back in October.

Fifth to Lucia Valentina beaten only two lengths on Emirates Stakes Day in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m), four-year-old Savabeel mare No Tricks was far from disgraced first-up at Warrnambool when third over 1700m in the Koriot Cup.

Purrealist four-year-old Pure Karma also ran well last start when a close second over this track and distance behind Grande Rosso on February 6, while Doug Harrison’s Chester Manifold Stakes winner Tudor backs up from an Australia Day fourth in black-type company at the track.
