2016 Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude Field Features Calliope

Second favourite in early Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes betting, the John O’Shea-trained Calliope is the headline runner in Saturday’s Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude 2016 at Caulfield Racecourse.

Set to run as Caulfield Race 3 at 2:30pm (AEDT) on the CF Orr Stakes Day card, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (1100m) attracted 13 two-year-old fillies.

The majority of the youngsters in the mix are looking to back-up at the track in a fortnight in the $1.5 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

Mick Price’s star colt Extreme Choice is red hot $2.40 favourite in futures Blue Diamond Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au followed by Calliope ($9).

The Godolphin-raced Exceed And Excel filly won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) by nearly two lengths on debut at Randwick last October and has had a big hype on her ever since.

She gets the chance to live up to that hype this weekend when she returns for her Melbourne debut jumping from barrier five with Steven Arnold in the saddle.

To wear the number one saddlecloth in the Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude field this weekend is the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Sword Of Light.

A $15 hope for the Group 1 at the end of the month, New Approach filly Sword Of Light is undefeated with two previous wins on the record including in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1000m) on January 26.

She had a nice gate three draw for that win however and will be doing it tougher in Saturday’s Group 2 drawn wide in barrier 13 of 13 for jockey Damian Lane who retains the ride.

Two other fillies are also currently paying $15 to win the Blue Diamond Stakes in a fortnight with Concealer and Zamzam drawn in barriers eight and six respectively this weekend.

Tony McEvoy trains Nicconi filly Concealer who won a Group 3 over 1000m down the Flemington straight on debut on Melbourne Cup Day last November.

She is first-up on Saturday and has Mark Zahra in the saddle.

Zamzam is a Dwayne Dunn mount, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained daughter of Redoute’s Choice also undefeated after her win on debut at Moonee Valley by two lengths on January 29.

Blue Diamond Fillies Preview runner-up Emphatically is also accepted for the Prelude rematch, the Ciaron Maher-trained Not A Single Doubt filly drawn win in barrier four.

Also out of the same lead-up race following the traditional Blue Diamond Stakes path is third placegetter Dream First for Leon & Troy Corstens who has the inside run from barrier one in the BD Fillies Prelude.

Other previous winners in the line-up meanwhile include the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Northern Meteor filly Quick Feet and Thyme For Roses prepared by Gai Waterhouse.
