2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes Nominations Attract 96

Nominations for all of the Group 1 The Championships races taking place at Randwick in April are now out including the Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2016 that attracted 96 early entries.

The richest race of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the $4 million Group 1 Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) drew less than the 120 that were nominated for last season.

The class of possible contenders for the weight-for-age classic is still top notch however including the reigning Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Criterion.

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained international performer beat home triple Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux in the classic last season before becoming a four-time Group 1 winner in the Spring with success in the Caulfield Stakes.

He was runner-up to Winx in the Cox Plate and then a brave third over the two miles in the iconic Melbourne Cup before travelling overseas for a luckless ninth in the Hong Kong Cup in December.

The five-year-old son of Sebring hasn’t raced again since, but is on track to score successive Queen Elizabeth Stakes victories for the first time since Grand Armee (2004 – 2005).

Hayes & Dabernig have also nominated for the likes of Geelong Cup – Sandown Cup double winner Almoonqith and 2014 Australian Oaks winner Rising Romance who also boasts a host of Group 1 seconds including in that year’s Caulfield Cup and the Mackinnon Stakes last spring.

The shortest-priced of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes nominees aside from Criterion is Winx for Chris Waller.

Sydney’s leading trainer Waller has won two editions of the race with My Kingdom Of Fife (2011) and Reliable Man (2013) and has his Cox Plate winning mare Winx on the Queen Elizabeth path this year.

Resuming this Saturday in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m), Winx is nominated for a host of Group 1 autumn features including the Doncaster Mile, TJ Smith Stakes and Queen Of The Turf Stakes but Waller has confirmed the Queen Elizabeth Stakes is the number one target.

Also right up the top of all-in Queen Elizabeth Stakes betting for Waller is the English import Storm The Stars who is yet to race down under.

A Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter back in Europe, the Sea The Stars stallion isn’t going under the bookmakers’ radar this autumn based on his form overseas.

Waller has a total of 15 Queen Elizabeth Stakes entries this year with other notable hopes including his Blue Diamond Stakes – Caulfield Guineas winning colt Press Statement, the reigning Doncaster champ Kermadec and four-year-old Turnbull Stakes winning Zabeel stallion Preferment.

New Zealander Murray Baker has both his Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan and Emirates Stakes winner Turn Me Loose in the mix after the trainer’s win in 2014 with It’s A Dundeel.

There is also a strong international presence this year with four Japanese-trained horses in the mix including Deep Impact stallion Tosen Stardom who ran fifth to Criterion last year on the back of a Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) second in Rosehill to the same galloper.

A notable omission from the race is the Aidan O’Brien-trained Irish galloper Highland Reel, third to Winx in the Cox Plate before a Hong Kong Vase win at Sha Tin, who was missing from all The Championships nominations.

The 2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes first acceptances close at midday on Tuesday March 8 followed by the final field and barriers on Tuesday April 5.
