Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
After a first-up win in the Breeders Classic over the weekend Sydney’s ace trainer Chris Waller has his progressive mare Amicus on track for the Coolmore Classic 2016 next month.
Last seen running a brave fifth to Politeness in Melbourne’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington in November, the four-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock kicked off her autumn campaign in the $175,000 Group 2 Thoroughbred Breeders NSW Breeders Classic (1200m) at Royal Randwick.
Hot favourite was the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Dublin Lass ($2) who failed to fire and could only manage to cross fourth lengths away sixth to the Hugh Bowman-ridden winner after settling three-wide and facing the breeze in a slow-paced race.
On the line Amicus had a narrow short half-head margin to spare over the Lee Curtis-trained roughie of the field Press Report ($41) who was run down in the closing stages, while Team Snowden’s other runner I’ve Got The Looks ($5) crossed just a neck further back for third.
Bowman played the role of stalker throughout the Breeders Classic with Amicus chasing Press Report all the way through, and was confident she could get there in time.
“She is a good horse,” the winning hoop told the media post-win on Saturday.
“At the 100m I was pretty confident she would get there, she is a winner.”
This Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival Waller plans to keep his Cox Plate winning superstar mare Winx and Amicus separate, the latter to target the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 12.
Waller has saddled-up seven Coolmore Classic runners over the years for one second and one third, but is yet to take out the fillies-and-mares’ feature.
Last season Amicus was narrowly beaten when only a quarter length away fourth to Plucky Belle as a 30/1 outsider in the Coolmore Classic, a performance Waller is hoping she improves on 12 months later.
“Amicus was only just beaten in the Coolmore last year and she would still get into the race pretty well at the weights,” he told The Daily Telegraph.
Bowman rode Amicus for her biggest win to date when she saluted in the 2014 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m), but believes that 1200 – 1400m is her pet distance.
“I feel 1200m-1400m is her best distance range,” Bowman said.
“I’m not going to interfere with Chris’s program but the Coolmore would be the logical race for her.
“She would be third-up into a Coolmore and that seems a good target for her.
“The 1500m of that race is OK for her as I just feel she is not a real miler. She feels like one (miler) but is not as strong at that trip.”
Winx meanwhile is down to resume racing this Saturday in Randwick’s $250,000 Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) with her major target being the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Day 2 of The Championships in April.
