Adelaide horseman Tony McEvoy couldn’t be happier ahead of the 2016 Blue Diamond Stakes with the work his smart filly Concealer is doing leading up to end-of-month Caulfield Group 1.
The two-year-old daughter of Nicconi was one of the upcoming Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival-bound youngsters on show at Friday morning’s Flemington jump-outs.
She worked extremely well recording the third fastest time of the morning completing the 800m run in 46.89 seconds, pleasing her Angaton-based trainer McEvoy who has her targeting the $1.5 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 27.
“I was very pleased. Her work has been solid all the way through,” McEvoy told Racing Victoria.
“I took her off to Moonee Valley the other day and she got very lost and confused me a little bit of where we’re at, but trialling down the straight, which is the scene of her very impressive victory.
“It was a lovely trial … [jockey] Mark Zahra said she felt fabulous.”
Concealer is set to run again in the $200,000 Group 2 Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude (1100m) on February 13, CF Orr Stakes Day, a race that has produced two of the past four winners with Samaready (2012) and Earthquake (2014) both completing the double.
McEvoy has had nine previous Blue Diamond Stakes runners for just one second place finish to date and is gearing up with his strongest contingent to date.
The shortest priced of his hopes in the Ladbrokes-sponsored classic is Concealer at $17 in futures Blue Diamond Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Markets are led by Mick Price’s Inglis Nursery winner Extreme Choice ($6) who has his final lead-up in Saturday’s $150,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield where he is the odds-on favourite to win.
Like the current Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes betting favourite Concealer has had just the one start for one win to date.
At Flemington last Melbourne Cup Carnival in November she debuted in the Group 3 Emirates Airline Plate (1000m) down the straight and enjoyed a half-length win over Prompt Response.
Price also saddles-up two possible Blue Diamond contenders at Caulfield on the weekend in the $250,000 Inglis Premier (1200m) with Hey Doc and Lessyd.
He rates Concealer a far classier juvenile however, as reflected in Blue Diamond betting.
“Concealer, she’s been the benchmark of mine pretty much all the way through, and I think she’s a level up from those two,” he said.
