Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
One of three black-type Caulfield races running in Melbourne this Saturday is the 2016 W.J. Adams Stakes, betting tips on the short distance sprint found below.
Set to run as Caulfield Race 7 at 4:30pm (AEST), this year’s $120,000 Listed W.J. Adams Stakes (1000m) field is down to 11 runners after the withdrawal of the Danny O’Brien-trained Bullpit (9).
Leading the latest WJ Adams Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.80 and firming is the Robert Smerdon-trained local Northern Meteor mare Atmospherical.
She is drawn a treat in gate two for jockey Nicholas Hall and is first-up for the season, boasting a strong record when resuming of two wins and a third from five runs so far.
The five-year-old was unplaced in all four of her spring runs, however is multiple stakes winner and is set for improvement after a change of stables.
The next best fancied in the WJ Adams Stakes odds are another Smerdon runner Reldas ($4.20) who was last seen running a close second over the 1200m at Caulfield on Boxing Day and Joe Pride’s short-distance specialist Diamond Oasis ($6) who carries the 58kg top weight.
So is it worth following the money trail or tipping a WJ Adams Stakes upset from the likes of progressive Wanted four-year-old Rough Justice ($9) or the in-form Runsati ($10) coming off back-to-back Moonee Valley wins over the distance?
#7 Rough Justice ($9)
For value we’re tipping this upcoming Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained gelding who won back-to-back races over 955m and 1000m respectively in November and then first-up in January before a sixth to Bullpit last time out. He was beaten four lengths on January 16 after a luckless run, but from a good barrier (4) with Damian Lane back in the saddle is a livewire chance who will enjoy a strong pace and be hard to hold out late.
#2 Reldas ($4.20)
Form around this Testa Rossa gelding is strong and he was only narrowly nosed out of the Christmas Stakes (1200m) win here on December 26. He jumped from gate 10 of 12 that day and will be better in six, Mark Zahra riding, and should enjoy dropping back in distance. A strong speed will suit and if he stays out of trouble, can peel around the outside and fly home in the closing stages.
#1 Diamond Oasis ($6)
A class son of Lonhro prepared in Sydney, Diamond Oasis was last seen running fourth to Boss Lane at Randwick over the 1000m on January 16. That followed a Gold Coast Boxing Day win in Queensland over 900m, and he’s a gun over this distance (12-5-2-1). Back in Melbourne for the first time since last Cox Plate Day when narrow runner-up to Tawteen over 955m at Moonee Valley and only needs to handle the 58kg top weight to salute from gate three with Dwayne Dunn in the saddle.
