A key lead-up to the Australian Guineas runs at Caulfield Racecourse on the weekend with Manfred Stakes 2016 betting tips of the three-years-old feature detailed below.
Due to jump as Caulfield Race 8 at 5:00pm (AEST) as the penultimate event on the program, this autumn’s $150,000 Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) field is down to a dozen runners after the surprise scratching of the Mick Price-trained Prince Of Brooklyn (1).
Leading Manfred Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au now paying $3.90 for the win is the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained market mover Golden Spin.
The son of Medaglia D’Oro has won four from five to date and comes off back-to-back Benchmark 78 wins over the track and distance this summer including a big three length effort on January 9.
Following in the Manfred Stakes odds are four other single figure hopes including Darren Weir’s black-type winning Teofilo colt Palentino ($4.80) and the undefeated Peter Moody-trained son of Starcraft Vostok ($6) drawn well in barrier three.
So can Golden Spin keep the winning streak going or is there an upset Manfred Stakes result on the cards from the likes of Price’s Caulfield Guineas third placegetter Ready For Victory ($7), the Michael Moroney-trained son of Sebring Tulsa ($9) or Ciaron Maher’s Group 3 winning Bon Hoffa colt Bon Aurum ($15)?
#6 Palentino ($4.80)
Think Palentino can pick up where he left off in the spring after his Listed 1400m win at Flemington during November’s Melbourne Cup Carnival. He has won two from one to date and will improve on whatever he does here eyeing a 2016 Australian Guineas run over the mile next month. Barrier six is ideal giving hoop Brad Rawiller options aboard this progressive and classy galloper.
#5 Sovereign Nation ($21)
This David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Encoast De Lago colt looks over the odds and too well-priced to ignore for a Place bet. He is a dual winner from five starts including taking out Moonee Valley’s Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley in early October last year. Finished a credible fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, also over the mile, before an eighth in the Vase over 2040m on Cox Plate Day. Will be better stepping up over distance later this campaign, but fresh he could surprise at this distance if he comes back strongly.
#7 Golden Spin ($3.90)
This ultra-consistent favourite has plenty of money flowing in for him and definitely boasts the fitness edge over many of his rivals. He saluted at the track and distance in easier company before a four week freshen-up and is undefeated at Caulfield. His record is very good so far and deserves a shot in tougher company. This is it, can he handle it?
