Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Dublin Lass has opened the red hot favourite to win Saturday’s Breeders Classic 2016 at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.
This year’s $175,000 Group 2 Thoroughbred Breeders NSW Breeders Classic (1200m) runs as Randwick Race 4 at 2:30pm (AEST) and attracted a final field of seven mares.
Sitting top of the Breeders Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.25 for the win after firming early from $2.30 is O’Reilly five-year-old Dublin Lass.
She has a strong record over the distance of three wins and four seconds from 10 starts to date and returns off an eight week break following her fifth to Cradle Me in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at Randwick.
Before that she enjoyed a Rosehill black-type win over 1100m second-up after a smart second when resuming at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival in the Group 3 G.H. Mumm Stakes (1100m).
Dublin Lass has the fresh form and only faces a small field with gun Sydney hoop James McDonald in the saddle making her a hard favourite to go past.
In an open Breeders Classic Stakes betting market there are four other single figure hopes including Team Snowden’s other runner I’ve Got The Looks ($4.20).
Jumping from barrier five with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle, the Choisir six-year-old is third-up on the weekend looking to improve on her last start fifth to Howmuchdoyouloveme in Gosford’s Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) on January 8.
She has previous winning form at the track and looks to be improving, so if she is ready to peak third-up like she has in the past could be ready to win.
The next best in betting is the rails-drawn Amicus ($4.80) for the state’s premier trainer Chris Waller.
Hugh Bowman rides the 58kg top weight in this set weights plus penalties spring, classy Fastnet Rock four-year-old Amicus racing for the first time since her brave fifth just over two lengths off Politeness in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Victoria Derby Day in Melbourne.
Her latest win was last September, also at Flemington, in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) and she comes off two trials putting her right in the mix.
The other single figure hopes are Miss Cover Girl ($8.50) for Brisbane’s Kelly Schweida and the Grant Marshall-trained Slots ($9).
Four-year-old Miss Cover Girl was last seen running third to Tina Melina at Doomben on January 23 in the Listed Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap (1200m) and drops from 59kg that run to 55kg here with Tommy Berry booked for the ride.
Slots meanwhile gets in on 54kg and comes off a second in the Takeover Target Stakes.
Rounding out the Breeders Classic field and odds are then John Sargent’s Lonhro four-year-old Queen Of Kariba ($13) and former promising juvenile Press Report ($34) drawn in barriers three and two respectively.
