Metaphorical Tops 2016 Hobart Cup Field

Peter Moody’s visiting Victorian stayer Metaphorical headlines the Hobart Cup 2016 final acceptances for Monday’s Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival feature.

Set to run as Hobart Race 7 at 4:35pm (local time), this summer’s $200,000 Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) has attracted a field of 15 gallopers.

Drawn wide in gate 14 for jockey Damien Oliver to overcome is the 58kg top weight from Melbourne, Dylan Thomas mare Metaphorical.

The five-year-old comes off a string of good summer runs including her Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) third at Caulfield on Boxing Day and a last start fourth over 2000m at Flemington on January 16.

She is right up in weights however and is yet to win over further than 2040m so faces a tough Tasmanian assignment on Monday.

The only other hopeful above the 55.5kg minimum in the Hobart Cup weights this year is the Stuart Gandy-trained Geegees Goldengirl (56.5kg) who has apprentice Sigrid Carr in the saddle from gate 11.

The Brighton-trained Wordsmith four-year-old is in top form this season having finished top three in her four most recent runs dating back to December 9 when runner-up to Admiral in the Listed Conquering WFA (1400m) at Launceston.

Since then the classy mare has run third in the Listed Tasmanian Stakes (1600m), won the Devonport Cup (1880m) on the Synthetic track and finished second last time out behind Up Cups over 2200m at the Hobart track in the Summer Cup.

Gandy has also accepted for Gee Gee’s La Quita (barrier six) who is an outside chance not having finished in the money since a 1400m Hobart win in September of 2014.

David Brunton’s Summer Cup winning five-year-old Up Cups also backs-up in the Hobart Cup on Monday looking to complete the double, the Helike gelding having also saluted over 2100m at the track two back.

Up Cups carried 59kg to victory last start and drops to 55.5kg this weekend with jockey David Pieres continuing is association.

Summer Cup third placegetter Player One is another in-form Hobart Cup hope this season, the Max Cowen-trained Host six-year-old beaten four lengths last time out.

Third in the Conquering WFA in December, Player One was also second to Up Cups on January 8 and is out to turn the tables having drawn nicely in barrier four for jockey Anthony Darmanin for round three.

Drawn nicely in gate two with star interstate and internationally performed hoop Craig Williams riding is the Chris Waller-trained Sydney galloper Quick Strike.

A four-year-old son of High Chaparral, the up-and-comer was last seen running fourth with 60kg on his back over 2406m at Caulfield on Boxing Day ahead of his Tasmanian debut.

Along with Up Cups the other last start winners are the Richard Laming-trained Redoute’s Choice stallion Wales (12) who saluted over 2040m at Moonee Valley on January 23 and Brendan McShane’s Magnus five-year-old Hugo (3) who won at Launceston over 2100m late last month.

Other notable hopes include Scott Brunton’s runner-up to Hugo last start Oerter with the outside alley to overcome, the John Blacker-trained Smoke ‘N’ Whisky who was third in the same lead-up and Settler’s Stone coming off a fourth.
