One of two black-types on the Bow Mistress Stakes night program, this season’s $100,000 Listed Schweppes Tasmanian Derby (2200m) jumps as Hobart Race 6 at 5:44pm (local).

Of the eight runners in the mix the sure to be favourite in Tasmanian Derby betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is the in-form Bushranger gelding Jerilderie Letter.

Prepared at Spreyton the up-and-comer has won five of his six starts to date including both previous runs at Hobart Racecourse.

Those wins came back-to-back in Listed company at his two most recent starts when completing the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) – Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) double with Anthony Darmanin in the saddle.

A rider is yet to be confirmed for the champion Tasmanian three-year-old of the season on Friday, Jerilderie Letter jumping from barrier two looking to keep his undefeated Hobart record in check.

The only other last start winner in the Tasmanian Derby field this season is the Darren Weir-trained Victorian visitor Howard Be Thy Name in gate six with Brad Rawiller in the saddle.

A nicely-bred son of Redoute’s Choice, Howard Be Thy Name is yet to finish out of the money in his six career starts that have netted just the one win when the colt saluted over the mile at Ballarat on January 27.

Also from Victoria is the Patrick Payne-trained Zabeel gelding Al Shameel who has run second in his four most recent runs including being beaten only a length by Jerilderie Letter in the Hobart Guineas on January 24.

The up-and-comer may have consistency on his side but is yet to win over further than 1200m so how he handles his first look at 2200m will be key to his chances of turning the tables.

The other youngster coming off a top three Hobart Guineas finish is Barry Campbell’s Sharkbite gelding Siorca.

Stablemate to Tasmanian star and Group 1 performer in Melbourne Admiral, Siorca was fourth in the Tasmanian Guineas beaten only one and quarter lengths before his third in the Hobart Guineas where he seemed to relish the step up in distance.

Another last start placegetter in the mix is the John Blacker-trained son of Savoire Vivre Special Shot who saluted on the Devonport Synthetic track two back before his third at Hobart over a mile last time out.

Rounding out the Tasmanian Derby line-up are Trouble Bound and the Robert Smerdon-trained stablemates Spirited Character and Infinite Reign.
