I Love It Defends Bow Mistress Trophy Title

John Salanitri’s visiting Melbourne mare I Love It is back racing at Hobart Racecourse on Friday shooting for back-to-back wins in the Bow Mistress Trophy.

Last Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival the daughter of Artie Schiller, prepared at Caulfield, enjoyed her first black-type win in the $125,000 Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m).

This week the now five-year-old, lightly raced for her age with just 14 previous starts, returns to the Apple Isle defending her title in the weight-for-age sprint for fillies and mares.

The 2016 Bow Mistress Trophy attracted a bumper 23 nominations.

I Love It hasn’t raced since November 5 at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival when sixth, beaten under a length and a half by Pittsburgh Flyer in the Group 3 G.H. Mumm Stakes (1100m) on a Heavy (9) track.

Success first-up on Friday will see the mare break a year long drought.

She may not have won since her Bow Mistress triumph last year, but she has run top three in elite level company when third to Miracles Of Life in Adelaide’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) last May.

I Love It also trialled well at home last week and is set to travel to Tasmania on Tuesday evening.

“I trialled I Love It at Caulfield on Wednesday and she went super so everything is on track for her to try and make it back-to-back wins in the Bow Mistress,” Salanitri told Tas Racing.

“She is booked on the boat next Tuesday night and she will be stabled with David Brunton.”

Despite the large number of entries there is just one last start winner among the Bow Mistress Trophy nominations this year with the John Blacker-trained local Shaft four-year-old Erin’s Element.

Trained at Longford the progressive mare comes off a win over 1100m at Hobart and is back in black-type company for the first time since her second to Hellova Street in the Listed Newmarket Tasmanian Handicap (1200m) last November.

Runner-up in the same lead-up race, seven-year-old Sh’Bourne Spirit is also among the entries as is third-placed Snippetee Bee.

Along with Erin’s Element Blacker has also nominated for Tough Speed four-year-old Into The Wind who boasts an outstanding Hobart record (3-2-1-0) and returning Holy Roman Emperor mare Ryan’s Daughter.

Just two three-year-old fillies are nominated to take on the older mares in this season’s Bow Mistress and both travel from interstate if accepted.

Caulfield’s Clinton McDonald prepares the lightly raced Love Days who has had four starts in Melbourne for two wins and a third, while Pat Carey from Mornington has Purrealist filly Purrpussful in the mix.

From Cranbourne is the Michael Kent-trained Miss Steele who ran fourth in the Robert Sangster Stakes last autumn at Morphettville.

Fellow Cranbourne horseman Robbie Griffiths has two Bow Mistress Trophy nominees this summer with Mossbeat and Nadeem Lass.

Four-year-old Mossbeat was in flying form during the spring including her last start third to Solicit in the Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m) at Sandown-Hillside on November 14.

Gerald Ryan’s class Summoned Stakes winner Solicit returned last weekend at Rosehill running second as the beaten favourite behind runaway winner Our Boy Malachi in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes in Sydney ahead of Group 1 runs in the CF Orr Stakes and Futurity Stakes at Caulfield in Melbourne.

Stablemate Nadeem Lass is a six-year-old daughter of Nadeem whose last run was a first-up third to Bullpit, runner-up to Headwater in the Listed Kensington Stakes at Flemington last weekend, on January 16.

She has run top three in eight of her 11 most recent runs dating back to last March, including a third to Vibrant Rouge at Launceston in the Group 3 Vamos Stakes (1400m).
