David Pfieffer’s Canterbury Classic winning mare Cradle Me is one of the headline Breeders Classic 2016 nominations taken for the feature race at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse this weekend.
This season’s $175,000 Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) attracted 12 early entries, nominations for the mares’ sprint clash extended until 11am (AEDT) on Tuesday.
There are just two last start winners currently in the mix for the set weights plus penalties event including Pfieffer’s Easy Rocking seven-year-old Cradle Me.
She won both of her Randwick starts over this track and distance in December with the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap and Canterbury Classic before a four-week freshen-up ahead of the Breeders Classic.
Also looking to extend a summer – autumn winning streak is the Bjorn Baker-trained Selita who has won her past four starts consecutively.
The progressive Shaft four-year-old was last seen holding on narrowly over 1400m at Randwick on January 16, Saturday to be her first run in black-type company if accepted.
Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller has won the past two editions of the Breeders Classic with his grey mare Catkins and is back in 2016 looking for another success this time with Amicus.
A four-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock, Amicus hasn’t raced since her fifth to Politeness in Flemington’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) over the mile in Melbourne back on October 31.
She hasn’t won since last September in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m), also run at Flemington, and races in Sydney for the first time since her Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) win in August last year.
Amicus has trialled twice in Sydney since the Myer Classic run, where she was beaten just over two lengths, and has won one of her four previous Randwick assignments to date.
The other top-rated hope among the entries is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained O’Reilly five-year-old Dublin Lass.
Her last win was at Rosehill in late November’s Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m), after which she finished only one and a half lengths off fellow Breeders Classic hope Cradle Me in the Razor Sharp Handicap.
Team Snowden have also nominated for I’ve Got The Looks, the six-year-old daughter of Choisir’s last start producing a fifth to Howmuchdoyouloveme in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford in early January.
Before that she was third to Cradle Me in the Canterbury Classic, with her last victory being at Doomben in Brisbane’s Listed Junamo Stakes (1200m) in May where she beat home stablemate Dublin Lass by a long neck.
Other notable Breeders Classic nominees this summer include the Kelly Schweida-trained four-year-old from Queensland Miss Cover Girl and Grant Marshall’s Takeover Target runner-up Slots.
