Set to run as Rosehill Race 3 at 1:55pm (AEDT), this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) features a final field of eight promising juveniles including four with previous race experience.

Sitting top of the latest Canonbury Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying a short $2 for the win after drifting out from an opening odds-on price is the unraced Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Defcon.

Tipped as a potential contender for Melbourne’s Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at the end of February, this Choisir colt has had big hype on him since his first trial win at Randwick last September.

He’s had two subsequent hit-outs ahead of his highly anticipated debut on the weekend, the latest a one length win over 900m at Rosehill where he races in the Canonbury.

The other best fancied in a hard-to-predict clash are another debutant, the Gerald Ryan-trained Lonhro colt Star Of Monsoon ($4.20) drawn nicely in barrier three and the rails-drawn Tessera ($5.50) for Godolphin coming off a win on debut over 1100m at Randwick on January 16.

So will Defcon live up to the hype or is there an upset Canonbury Stakes result on the agenda this weekend from the likes of the early market mover Guard Of Honour ($13 into $8) who has won two summer trials including at Wyong earlier in the month by four lengths or the Team Hawkes-trained Mount Panorama ($9) out to atone for a luckless sixth on debut behind Tessara?

#5 Defcon ($2)

With babies on debut anything can happen but happy to give Defcon the benefit of the doubt and say he’ll live up to the hype. He comes from a master trainer of juveniles, Snowden having prepared three Blue Diamond Stakes winners since 2011. The trial form is blistering and he’s proved he can get around the Rosehill track without issue. It’s a small field, the potential is there now he just needs to put it all together on race day.

#1 Tessera ($5.50)

Race experience goes a long way and this John O’Shea-trained Medaglia D’Oro colt got the job done on debut at Randwick earlier in the month winning over 1100m. James McDonald retains the ride for the galloper’s second run here over the same distance at Sydney’s other major track. Gets the run of the race from the inside alley and after leading all the way last time out, gets the chance to repeat the feat and stay undefeated.

#4 Mount Panorama ($9)

The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Sebring colt debuted over 1100m at Randwick on January 16 and was beaten nearly five lengths by Tessera, who he gets the chance to turn the tables on here. That run was better than it looks on paper by the beaten odds-on favourite who got stuck in the worst part of the track. He can improve, whether it’s enough to win is another matter but a top three finish is definitely on the cards.
