Sword Of Light Wins Blue Diamond Fillies Preview

Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra have uncovered a potential 2016 Blue Diamond Stakes star with smart filly Sword Of Light retaining her undefeated status with a win in Tuesday’s Blue Diamond Fillies Preview.

The headline Australia Day race held at Caulfield Racecourse, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1000m) attracted a bumper field of 15 starters.

Going out as a $6.50 chance in betting, New Approach filly Sword Of Light continued her gun run for connections including Racing Victoria chairman David Moodie with her second win from as many starts.

On debut she saluted over 1000m at Echuca by over five lengths, her winning margin on Tuesday smaller but still a comprehensive one and a quarter lengths.

Jockey Damian Lane retained his association with the blooming two-year-old who beat home the Ciaron Maher-trained Emphatically ($14) and the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Dream First ($7.50) who gained a start as the first emergency.

Moodie was also the part-owner of 2010 Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily and is making the comparisons between her and the up-and-coming Sword Of Light.

A hefty $55,000 late entry fee will need to be paid to get Sword Of Light, scratched at the gates last start at Flemington on New Year’s Day, into the $1.5 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) back at Caulfield on February 27.

“She’s a bit Crystal Lily-like in that she defies the odds and she’s got ability,” a wary Moodie told the Herald Sun.

“But she’s been through the ringer a little bit, so it’s highly unlikely she would get to a Blue Diamond with everything she has been through.”

Lane however is hoping Moodie changes his mind, the hoop thrilled with the Blue Diamond Preview winning performance of the young filly who looks to have plenty of upside.

“She’s an improving sort of filly and is very green still, so I think there is more in the tank,” Lane told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“She’s a flighty filly full stop, but she was all right in the race … hopefully she keeps improving and learns to cool her head a little bit. She was beautiful during the run.”

Sword Of Light won in 57.50 seconds, a fraction faster than the day’s Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Preview winner, the Godolphin-raced Cohesion (57.68).

The Mick Price-trained Inglis Nursery winner from last month, Extreme Choice ($6) continues to lead all-in Blue Diamond Stakes odds at the race’s sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au.

Sword Of Light has shot up futures Blue Diamond Stakes betting with her Preview win paying $15, the same price Cohesion is paying to join Sepoy (2011) and Earthquake (2014) as the recent Godolphin – formerly Darley – owned winners of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival classic.
