The Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Tried And Tired, coming off a second in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) at Flemington, jumped the $4.40 favourite for Tuesday’s $120,000 Listed John Dillion Stakes (1400m).

It was Price’s locally-trained Host gelding Mighty Like and jockey Craig Newitt who stole the show however beating home Tried And Tired by a long neck as a $21 shot in betting following a last-to-first comeback on the track.

In a close result the Lloyd Kennewell-trained Adelaide raider Baligari ($10) crossed for third under a length off the surprise John Dillion Stakes winner, with Chester Manifold winner Tudor in fourth.

Newitt rode the eventual winner cold throughout and Mighty Like had enough left in the tank late to nab the luckless runner-up, enjoying a weight drop from 58kg from his last start fifth behind stablemate Duke Of Brunswick over 1200m at Caulfield on January 9 to the 54kg minimum on Tuesday.

“He’s a lovely old horse,” Price’s stable foreman Mick Nolan told Racing Victoria.

“He was down in weight today, [sitting] back last … he seemed to be done, but that was it.

“He’s getting a bit older, and he’s a big, gross horse.

“He probably needed a run first-up, and probably not as bad as it looked.

“Significant weight drop always helps.”

The fellow Price-trained Duke Of Brunswick meanwhile jumped as the $4.60 second elect in the John Dillon but could only manage to cross two lengths off the winner for fifth despite also getting in on just 54kg.

“His run the other day was good,” winning jockey Newitt said of Mighty Like’s lead-up fifth.

“He had a big weight, and needed a run the other day.

“He had a really good weight pull on most of his rivals today.

“From the wide gate, it forced our hand to ride him quiet. The speed was there.

“He got on the back of the stablemate coming to the corner, and he sort of towed him into the race.

“He peeled off his back, and reeled off a nice furlong.”

Mighty Like has now won nine of his 28 career starts for $339,540 in total prize money.

The John Dillon was the horse’s maiden black-type victory.

Newitt also partnered Price’s Victoria Derby winner Tarzino in a gallop on Tuesday morning, thrilled with his improvement heading towards a first-up run in $500,000 Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 13.
