Powerhouse racing operation Godolphin are firmly in the Blue Diamond Stakes frame once more with the smart John O’Shea-trained colt Cohesion winning the colts and geldings Preview at Caulfield Racecourse on Tuesday.
Formerly Darley, Godolphin enjoyed recent wins in the premier race for two-year-olds during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival with Sepoy (2011) and Earthquake (2014).
Now nicely-bred Lonhro colt Cohesion heads towards this year’s edition of the $1.5 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 27.
On debut the up-and-comer ran fourth to subsequent Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Capitalist in Sydney’s Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) back in October.
In his first race since, Cohesion took to the track on Australia Day with Ben Melham aboard from barrier 10 of 12 in the $150,000 Listed Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Preview (1000m).
Despite the wide gate, the youngster was able to lead all the way and beat home Robbie Griffiths’ roughie shot Capannello ($51) by one and a quarter lengths while the Peter Moody-trained El Venetian ($14) crossed two lengths off the winner in third.
“What he lacks in size he makes up for in professionalism,” Melham said. “He has really good natural barrier speed, he was able to cross them although we were going quick and he came back under me in a good manner, relaxed well for me and had a good turn of foot at the finish.
“He is still stargazing a little bit in front of them,” winning hoop Melham told The Sydney Morning Herald.
“There’s good improvement to come, it was only his second start.”
Well-backed favourite Weatherly only managed to cross for sixth after slipping at the start and over-racing throughout with jockey Craig Williams aboard, and trainer Paul Messara plans to press ahead with a Blue Diamond bid.
“We didn’t win the battle today but he definitely hasn’t lost any admirers the way he went,” Williams said post-loss.
The day’s Blue Diamond Fillies Preview winner Sword Of Light posted a slightly faster time of 57.50 seconds one race after Cohesion took out the black-type to break his maiden status in 57.68 seconds.
While connections are still debating whether or not to pay the $55,000 late Blue Diamond Stakes entry for Sword Of Light, part-owned by Racing Victoria chairman David Moodie, Cohesion is firmly in the mix for next month’s feature.
Melham believes the step-up to 1200m for the Group 1 would be a non-issue for Cohesion.
The latest all-in Blue Diamond Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have both Preview winners paying $15 for the win with markets led by the Mick Price-trained Inglis Nursery winner from December 12 Extreme Choice ($6) and the unraced Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Choisir colt Defcon ($8).
