2016 Scenic Blast Stakes Field Down to Seven

Only seven sprinters remain in the feature Perth race this weekend, the Scenic Blast Stakes 2016 taking place at Ascot Racecourse.

Set to run as Ascot Race 6 on Saturday, this summer’s $100,000 Listed Scenic Blast Stakes (1200m) originally attracted seven final acceptors.

The early scratching of the Gavin Foster-trained Silver Plated (4) who was to have resumed racing in the handicap clash leaves a diminutive field for the black-type clash.

The only galloper allocated above the 54.5kg minimum and giving the weight away to his rivals is the Chris Gangemi-trained Rock Magic allocated a hefty 59kg.

Jarrad Noske rides the Redoute’s Choice six-year-old from barrier three on the weekend, the gelding looking to return to winning form after a close last start sixth to Sheidel in the Listed Summer Scorcher (1000m) at the track on Perth Cup Day.

Rock Magic was defeated only one and a half lengths in the Summer Scorcher in his first run since beating home Watermans Bay in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) in November.

Fourth in the Summer Scorcher on January 2, the Simon Miller-trained Exceed And Excel four-year-old First Among Equals looks a big hope of taking out Saturday’s feature.

The super consistent gelding has won seven of his 13 starts to date and is undefeated over the 1200m with three wins from as many starts over the distance he’s back up to in the Scenic Blast Stakes.

After his Summer Scorcher run he crossed a devastatingly close second to Lucky Street at Ascot in the Listed Miss Andretti Stakes (1100m) on January 16 and can finish closer again getting the extra metres.

Also coming out of a good run in the Summer Scorcher from the start of the month is the Darren Mcauliffe-trained third placegetter Rebel King.

The four-year-old son of Universal Ruler finished only a half-length away in a blanket finish first-up and shoots for his first win since his Listed HG Bolton Stakes (1200m) success at Belmont back in July last year.

Apprentice Clint Johnston-Porter replaces Chris Parnham, currently riding interstate, in the saddle of Rebel King on the weekend who jumps from the outside alley shooting for his third win from six starts over the 1200m.

Also third last time out and looking to go two better going out over the 1200m for the first time this preparation is the Grant Williams-trained Al Maher mare Silverstream.

The four-year-old, fourth to Robert Heathcote’s super sprint champion Buffering in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) back in November, improved on her 12th in the Summer Scorcher with a third in the Miss Andretti.

William Pike rode her from gate five in that run and is replaced by Lucy Warwick this weekend.

Perth’s premier hoop Pike instead rides rival Red Ora, the Daniel Morton-trained son of Due Sasso racing for the first time since last September.

The now four-year-old is undefeated at Ascot with five wins from as many starts at the track, but hasn’t raced there since his Perth Magic Millions 3YO Stakes win back in February last year.

Rounding out the Scenic Blast Stakes field this summer are the Neville Parnham-trained Lenience having his 27th start at the track and seven-year-old The Danskter drawn the rails in barrier one for regular rider Jason Whiting.
