Small 2016 Australia Day Cup Field Released

The Australia Day Cup 2016 headlines the Sydney racing action next Tuesday, January 26, but the black-type staying clash at Royal Randwick Racecourse has only attracted a diminutive field.

Due to run as Randwick Race 3 at 2:30pm (AEDT), this year’s $100,000 Listed Vili’s Pies Australia Day Cup (2400m) has six final acceptors.

The field and weights are led by the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss carrying 59kg from the outside barrier with Jason Collett retaining the ride on the Power Of Destiny seven-year-old.

Having his 51st start on Tuesday, the gelding comes off a Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) win from January 8 carrying 57.5kg so rises in weights.

He has winning form up to 3200m so will appreciate the extra metres in the Australia Day feature at a track he also has previous good form at.

Following in the Australia Day Cup weights with 56kg is one of two in the mix for Chris Waller, fellow last start winner Vilanova.

Drawn in gate two with Tommy Berry booked for the ride aboard the Commands five-year-old, Vilanova was last seen running at the track to win his first Randwick race from a dozen starts on New Year’s Day in the Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2400m).

He goes up two kilos from his 54.5kg winning weight however so will need to be firing on all cylinders to go back-to-back over the mile and a half at Randwick.

Waller’s other runner is 55kg hope Black Jag who James McDonald partners from gate four.

The Excites seven-year-old is a 70-start veteran coming off a dead last when 14th and beaten over 13 lengths by Tinto in the Magic Millions Trophy (1800m) on the Gold Coast last time out.

He was more competitive in the spring however and the rise in distance should suit, as will the smaller field.

Another Gosford Cup graduate along with the winner Destiny’s Kiss backing-up in the Australia Day Cup next week is the Gregory Hickman-trained third placegetter Dream Folk.

The Dream Ballad six-year-old was beaten one and a half lengths over the 2100m last start and drops from 56kg to the 54kg minimum for the rematch with Winona Costin jumping aboard.

Rounding out the field are Bryce Heys’ consistent O’Reilly five-year-old Thurston (3) and the rails-drawn nine-year-old Tingeera for Shoalhaven Heads horseman Terry Robinson.
