The Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap 2016 headlines the Doomben racing action in Brisbane this weekend, betting tips and selections for the sprint showdown found below.
Due to run as Doomben Race 7 at 4:16pm (QLD time), this year’s $100,000 Listed Novotel Brisbane Airport Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap (1200m) field features 13 female gallopers.
The latest Nudgee Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are led by the Tony Gollan-trained Tina Melina who has firmed in from $5.50 to $5 after drawing the inside alley.
The flying four-year-old daughter of Jet Spur won two on the trot including over this track and distance in December before her third last time out in the Gold Coast Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap (1300m) on January 9.
Her biggest dangers according to the bookies and the next shortest priced in the Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap betting markets are stablemate Sheiswhatsheis ($6) in the wide barrier 12 draw, Kelly Schweida’s classy top weight Miss Cover Girl ($8) and market mover Double Banger ($8) from Coffs Harbour.
So will the favourite get the job done and return to winning form or is there value tipping an upset Nudgee Handicap result this summer?
#2 Tina Melina ($5)
She is up to 58kg after carrying only 54kg in her three runs this time in, but this is the class runner in the race and her excellent lead-up form suggests she can handle the challenge. If she handles the weight she wins this from her top inside alley over the distance. Jim Byrne knows the mare well and was aboard for her win here three back and the good Gold Coast effort last time out. The barrier puts her right in it from the start.
#9 Double Banger ($8)
Another flying mare, this Jim Jarvis-trained Dubleo four-year-old ticks plenty of boxes. She is up notably in class having her maiden stakes assignment at her 16th career run, but she looks on track for it and deserves the chance after winning three on the trot before a last start second at Gosford beaten a neck over the distance. She drops from 55.5kg back to 54kg here, is drawn a treat in barrier four and money is coming for her.
#5 Adorabubble ($15)
For value this Barry Lockwood-trained local has a gun record over the distance (11-5-1-1) and comes off good lead-up form including her third to Saturday’s favourite Tina Melina at the Gold Coast on Boxing Day. The six-year-old Ferocity grey is after her first win since a Doomben upset at $26 back in October, loves the track and only needs to get up on speed from barrier 10 to be competitive in the finish.
