The feature race in Melbourne this weekend kicking off the Autumn Carnival is Moonee Valley’s Australia Stakes 2016, betting tips for the weight-for-age sprint found below.
Due to run as Moonee Valley Race 7 at 4:46pm (AEDT), this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Jeep Australia Stakes (1200m) features a field of 13 class gallopers.
The current Australia Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au have the Gary Portelli-trained Group 1 winner Rebel Dane as the firming favourite.
The six-year-old California Dane stallion opened at $3.60 in the Australia Stakes odds and has since been backed into $3.20.
Drawn in gate six he is set to get a nice midfield run and close late with Brenton Avdulla aboard for the horse’s first run since a third at the track and distance to Chautauqua in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) in the spring.
It’s an open market after the top fancy with six other single figure chances including Durendal, the last start Standish Handicap winner paying $6 to continue his rise through the ranks despite stepping notably up in class here.
Also well fancied at $8 is returning three-year-old Holler for Sydney’s John O’Shea, the Commands colt a Group 3 winner over the 1200m at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day.
So will the best in betting get the job done or is there an upset Australia Stakes result on the cards from the likes of the defending champion Mourinho ($9) drawn well n gate two or Darren Weir’s dual Group 1 champ Trust In A Gust ($9) in the outside alley but with a smart first-up record?
#8 Durendal ($6)
Durendal is up in class and many are saying that he won’t handle it, but he’s been rising through the ranks and hasn’t let down yet so giving him the chance to do so again here. Ellerton & Zahra have Damian Lane aboard again, the hoop confident on the horse. A good barrier five draw also suits, only needs to handle the Group 2 rise and running in weight-for-age company for the first time.
#2 Mourinho ($9)
Mourinho won the race 12 months ago and the eight-year-old is looking to go back-to-back first-up. He’s got a three from eight first-up record to date and files at Moonee Valley (13-5-2-1). Can be forgiven for the caught-up Cox Plate run when 12th to Winx last time out back in October, and from the gate will get a gun run at his favourite track so will be close again.
#13 Holler ($8)
O’Shea’s Commands colt won the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) at the track and distance by over four lengths at his seventh start on Cox Plate Day and is fresh and ready to fire. His first-up form so far is good (3-1-0-2) and is drawn in eight for Craig Williams. A class youngster on the improve that could surprise.
