First-up flyer You’ll Never returns to racing in this Saturday’s Carrington Stakes 2016 at Royal Randwick and master Sydney trainer Chris Waller is confident the galloper is ready to fire fresh.
One of only seven in this season’s $150,000 Listed Tattersalls Club Carrington Stakes (1400m), Waller’s six-year-old Commands gelding is looking to add to a top record of two wins and three seconds from five first-up runs.
His last victory was over the 1400m at Rosehill in late May while his last start produced a sixth when two and a half lengths off Keepit To Yourself in the Listed Winter Challenge Stakes (1500m) at the start of August.
It is a wide open Carrington Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au for the feature with five of the seven runners under $10 to win and the other two following closely with Gordon Yorke’s Gosford galloper Hidden Warrior ($11) and the Hawkes Racing-trained Agent ($14) drawn a treat in gate two for jockey Tommy Berry under $20.
Markets are led by the firming John O’Shea-trained Commands five-year-old Medcaut ($2.90) who is drawn the rails and shooting for three Randwick wins on the trot following a December Handicap success over the mile on Boxing Day.
Medcaut carried 56.5kg to victory in that December 26 clash with Blake Shinn in the saddle and carries the same weight with James McDonald taking over for the ride.
Shinn partners Carrington Stakes top weight Red Excitement ($7.50) on 59kg for Gerald Ryan, the horse racing for the first time since a distant 15th in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at the track over a month ago.
You’ll Never is also at single figures in the latest Carrington Stakes odds at a quote of $4.20 based on his smart fresh performances of the past.
He carries 58kg with Hugh Bowman booked for the ride from barrier four and Waller believes he can continue his consistent record with a run in the top two.
“He’s got a great record first-up,” Waller told Racenet.
“If anything he’s more forward into this preparation. In terms of fitness and in terms of weight.
“He looks lighter than he normally is which I see as a positive.”
Despite a nice career record of seven wins and 16 other minor placings from 39 starts, You’ll Never is yet to post a black-type win and this could be his best chance to do so according to his trainer.
“He’s got the good draw in a small field so should be able to stay out of trouble and 1400m is probably his best distance,” Waller said.
“He’s only had the one trial but he’s fit.”
That trial was a 900m hit-out in the wet on a Heavy (8) Rosehill track when fifth to Vashka at the start of the month.
Bowman meanwhile jumps aboard the galloper for just the second time having partnered him for a second at Gosford back in August of 2013.
