Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Tina Melina has opened top of the 2016 Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap odds to hand Brisbane’s best trainer Tony Gollan with another black-type win this summer in the Doomben Racecourse clash on the weekend.
Due to jump as Doomben Race 7 at 4:16pm (QLD time) on Saturday, this year’s $100,000 Listed Novotel Brisbane Airport Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap (1200m) attracted a final field of 13 female sprinters.
Three come from Gollan’s stable including the current $5 favourite and one of the early market movers in Nudgee Handicap betting Tina Melina.
Backed in from $5.50 to $5 after coming up trumps with barrier one for jockey Jim Byrne, the in-form Jet Spur four-year-old shoots for her third win from four runs this time in.
She saluted at Doomben and then the Gold Coaster over 1200m in December before her last start third behind I Am Zelady in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap (1300m) on January 9.
Back to 1200m, a distance she has won four from 10 over, the flyer only needs to handle the rise to 58kg to get back in the winners’ stall this time in stakes’ company.
There are four other single figure chances in the current Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au including the genuine market mover backed right in form $8 to $6 despite a wide draw, Sheiswhatsheis.
Also prepared by Gollan, the four-year-old daughter of Bernardini has a strong Doomben record of a win and two seconds from four starts to date but is back up in class this weekend.
Her last black-type assignment was at the Gold Coast in April last year when third to Bohemian Lily in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m).
She has finished in the money in all but of her four runs since in easier company, her latest run being a second to Sea Red over 1350m at Doomben on December 19.
She drops from 56kg that day to Saturday’s 54kg minimum and keeps jockey Tegan Harrison, but is drawn wide in gate 12.
The other firming $6 chance is Onemorezeta in barrier five with Michael Cahill to ride the Kris Lees-trained Newcastle visitor should she run.
Lees is weighing up whether to run the four-year-old at Doomben or in the Cellarbrations Benchmark 86 Handicap over the same distance back home at Randwick on Saturday.
“She needs a dry track,” Lees told Racenet.
“Storms are forecast for Sydney. They could get two mm or 20mm.
“If they get 20mm at Randwick I don’t want her running there so am leaning towards Brisbane, but there is also rain forecast up there – it’s a tricky call.
“Her first-up run was very good. She had no luck. She would be competitive in either race.
“I’ll have to make a decision this afternoon (Thursday) but it’s likely she’ll go to Doomben.”
She was beaten under two lengths when fourth first-up over 1100m at Canterbury on January 9 and is yet to run at Doomben.
Other notable hopes in the Nudge Handicap markets include the Kelly Schweida-trained Miss Cover Girl ($8) carrying the 59kg top weight with the state’s best jockey Damian Browne riding and ultra-consistent Coffs Harbour raider Double Banger ($9).
