There are only seven hopefuls lining up in Saturday’s 2016 Carrington Stakes field at Royal Randwick and top of the odds to hold off his six rivals is the John O’Shea-trained Medcaut.
This summer’s $150,000 Listed Tattersalls Club Carrington Stakes (1400m) might not boast the numbers but the handicap clash still features a bit of class.
Drawn the rails with barrier one and ace Sydney hoop James McDonald booked for the ride is Godolphin’s hope in the event Medcaut shooting for his third win on the trot.
The in-form Commands five-year-old sits is current $2.90 favourite in Carrington Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au and is firming in his price to extend the winning streak, continuing his nice record at the track.
To date the gelding has had four runs at Randwick for two wins, a second and a third.
Both of his recent wins were at the track in December including his narrow success over Monton in the December Handicap (1600m) on Boxing Day.
He drops back to 1400m for Saturday and is the one to beat according to the bookies.
There could be nice value in this year’s Carrington Stakes odds however with two nice types hot on the favourites heels in You’ll Never ($4.20) and Voilier ($4.60) drawn in barriers four and five respectively.
Sydney’s best Chris Waller prepares Commands six-year-old You’ll Never who hasn’t raced since early August last year.
His last win was back in May, but the bookies are taking no chances based on the horse’s imposing record when fresh.
First-up You’ll Never has never finished out of the top two boasting two wins and three seconds from five resuming runs to date, and the distance also holds no fears (17-4-3-4).
Voilier from the Warwick Farm stables of Gary Nickson meanwhile boasts the fitness edge racing third-up here off two good Sydney runs in the money.
The progressive Beneteau three-year-old has run second three times from five Randwick runs to date and rises back up in class for the first time since September, the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) runner-up out to make a mark getting out over more distance.
In a wide open market for the Sydney black-type there are another two hopes under $10 for the win with Zin Zan Eddie ($7) and the 59kg top weight Red Excitement ($7.50).
The Matthew Smith-trained Zizou six-year-old Zin Zan Eddie comes off a third over 1550m at Canterbury from January 9 and has winning form over the 1400m plus drops notably in weight from 58kg to the 54kg minimum here.
At the opposite end of the Carrington Stakes weight scale is the Gerald Ryan-trained Excites six-year-old Red Excitement who is out to atone for a last start 15th to Happy Clapper in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at the track back on December 12.
Rounding out Carrington Stakes odds this season but still under $20 to take it out are Takeover Target Stakes fourth placed Gosford galloper Hidden Warrior ($11) and the Team Hawkes-trained Pins eight-year-old Agent ($14) both drawn well in gates three and two respectively.
