Seven Horse 2016 Carrington Stakes Field Released

Sydney racing is headlined on Saturday by the Carrington Stakes 2016 at Royal Randwick where just seven horses are accepted to face off in the handicap clash.

Due to jump as Randwick Race 3 at 1:55pm (AEST), this year’s $150,000 Listed Tattersalls Club Carrington Stakes (1400m) betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is likely to be led by the in-form Medcaut who drew the inside alley.

Star Sydney hoop James McDonald is booked for the ride on the John O’Shea-trained Commands five-year-old who chases three straight wins after back-to-back summer victories in December at the track.

The latest was a narrow success over class galloper Monton in the December Handicap (1600m), and he drops back 200m from that run this weekend.

He gets in on the same 56.5kg weight again here and is the only last start winner in the Carrington Stakes field.

Heading the Carrington Stakes weights with 59kg is the Blake Shinn-ridden Red Excitement for Gerald Ryan with 59kg.

The six-year-old son of Excites is out to atone for a distant 15th to Happy Clapper in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) from December 12 where he carried 57.5kg from the outside barrier 20 draw.

The smaller field and drop in distance and class will suit this weekend, Red Excitement boasting a smart record at Randwick (6-3-0-0) and over the distance (10-6-1-1).

He is two-from-two over the 1400m at the track but needs to overcome the hefty kilos to retain his undefeated streak over the distance at Sydney’s top course.

Following in the weights with 58kg is the Chris Waller-trained You’ll Never who is first-up and running for the first time since early August last year.

Not having won since last May, the Commands six-year-old boasts plenty of form over the distance (17-4-3-4) and jumps from gate four with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Last year’s winning stable Hawkes Racing return with Agent, Tommy Berry booked to ride the veteran Pins eight-year-old from gate two on the 54kg minimum.

Having his 44th career start on the weekend, Saturday’s Chester Manifold Stakes is the first black-type assignment for Agent since his disappointing 12th in the Listed June Stakes (1100m) last winter.

Gosford trainer Gordon Yorke saddles-up six-year-old Hidden Warrior from barrier three, jockey Grant Buckley retaining the ride after guiding the horse to a close fourth to Howmuchdoyouloveme in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at home on January 8.

Rounding out the Carrington Stakes field this season are the Matthew Smith-trained Zin Zan Eddie coming off a Canterbury third over 1550m and dropping from 58kg to 54kg, and Gary Nickson’s in-form Beneteau three-year-old Voilier.

Voilier comes off two placings this time in and is up in class chasing his first win since a successful debut in December of 2014.

He is a dual Group placegetter however including his second to Shards at Randwick last August when beaten only a quarter-length in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m).
