Mick Price’s More Than Ready colt has won just one of his eight career starts to date saluting over 1000m in the Listed Festival Stakes at Flemington on debut last Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

While failing to post a win since his form has still been impressive including his second-up fourth to Vancouver in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) in Sydney.

His other most notable run was in October last year when third past the post beaten only two lengths by Press Statement in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Things went amiss for the progressive three-year-old however on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington when he finished a distant 10th to Japonisme in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) where he failed to handle the drop back in distance down the straight.

Price was pleased with Ready For Victory’s Sandown jumpout on Tuesday morning when second to recent winner at the track Popovich.

The horse worked well over 800m in the hit-out, run in 46.16 seconds, which was the fastest of the 13 heats of the morning and had a nice blowout afterwards.

“He ran second in a fast time so I was very happy with him,” Price told Racenet.

“He did really well in his spell so he was a bit soft and that showed at the end of the jumpout but he’s going well.

“He’s a three-year-old colt that has developed a bit in his spell so had a bit more weight on him when he came back.”

Price is looking at a first-up run for Ready For Victory in the $150,000 Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 6 before he is stepped up in class and distance over his campaign.

The major target for the colt this time in is the $750,000 Group Australian Guineas (1600m) over the Flemington mile on March 5 where Price will be chasing his third win in the classic.

His previous Australian Guineas winners were Light Fantastic (2008) and Heart Of Dreams (2009), while Ready For Victory’s sole win to date was on Australian Guineas Day 12 months ago.

Craig Newitt, who rode Price’s two previous Australian Guineas champions, is booked to ride Ready For Victory in the Manfred Stakes and in a 1400m lead-up after that before Price found a new jockey for the Group 1 race.

Newitt will chase his third Australian Guineas win aboard Victoria Derby winner Tarzino also from the Price stables.

The Tavistock colt hasn’t run since his two length romp over Etymology in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) last October and is set to resume in the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 13.

Futures Australian Guineas betting markets at are currently led by Grant Williams’s Group 1 Kingston Town Classic winning filly from WA Perfect Reflection and Group 1 winning New Zealand galloper Xtravagant at $7.

Ready For Victory meanwhile is listed as a $34 outsider in the latest all-in Australian Guineas odds while stablemate Tarzino is a better fancied hope at $11 to win another elite level for three-year-olds.
