2016 Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap Field Features Tina Melina

Tony Gollan’s in-form mare Tina Melina is one of the headline final acceptors for the Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap 2016 that highlights the Brisbane racing action at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday in Queensland.

The four-year-old daughter of Jet Spur is one of 13 female gallopers set to face off in Doomben Race 4 (4:16pm) – the $100,000 Listed Novotel Brisbane Airport Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap (1200m).

Brisbane’s leading trainer, Gollan has a total of three hopefuls in the sprint showdown led by Tina Melina who is drawn the rails in barrier one with veteran hoop Jim Byrne booked for the ride.

Byrne rode the mare for her last start third at the Gold Coast on January 9 in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap (1300m), before which she won back-to-back races over 1200m in December.

She has three wins and a second from seven previous Doomben runs and is four from 10 over the 1200m, a record she’s out to add to on Saturday.

In the Gold Coast Magic Millions race Tina Melina carried 54kg but goes up notably to 58kg this weekend.

Gollan’s other two Nudgee Handicap runners Sheiswhatsheis and Snake Charmer meanwhile get in on the 54kg minimum on Saturday drawn in barriers 12 and eight respectively.

Tegan Harrison has the ride on Bernardini four-year-old Sheiswhatsheis who comes off a second over 1350m at the track from December 19 and who has black-type form with her third in last April’s Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) behind subsequent Group 2 The Roses winner Bohemian Lily.

Snake Charmer is another four-year-old for Gollan, the daughter of Pentire looking to improve on her last start sixth at the Gold Coast behind stablemate Tina Melina on Boxing Day when beaten nearly five lengths.

Topping the Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap weights this summer with 59kg is the Kelly Schweida-trained Miss Cover Girl who the state’s best hoop Damian Browne rides from gate nine.

Schweida’s Monashee Mountain four-year-old is out to break a notable winning drought not having saluted since her Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) win in the wet at Randwick in April last year.

She also comes out of the Fillies & Mares Handicap on Magic Millions Day when eighth behind winner I Am Zelady.

Second-up in Saturday’s stakes showdown is the Kris Lees-trained Newcastle visitor Onemorezeta who comes off a first-up fourth beaten under two lengths at Canterbury from January 9.

Third in last autumn’s Gosford Guineas (1200m) she has her first run at Doomben in the Nudgee Handicap and jumps from gate five carrying 56.5kg with Michael Cahill aboard.

Also coming off a nice lead-up run and drawn well with barrier four is the Jim Jarvis-trained Double Banger who has run top two in her five most recent starts.

The Coffs Harbour-based Dubelo mare has form at the Gold Coast having won over 1200m by one and a half lengths two back and was runner-up over the same distance at Gosford last time out.

Her record over Saturday’s distance is strong with three wins, two seconds and a third from nine previous 1200m runs and she only needs to handle the class rise to be competitive.
