A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
The first official races of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival’s Blue Diamond Stakes series take place on Australia Day at Caulfield Racecourse next Tuesday including the Blue Diamond Fillies Preview 2016.
Run on January 26 along with the colts and geldings’ edition of the same lead-up into the $1.5 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 27, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) (1000m) has attracted a bumper 26 nominations.
Only 11 of the two-year-old fillies entered for the Group 3 clash have previous race experience including the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Extra Olives.
The daughter of Redoute’s Choice debuted on January 7 over 1112m at Kyneton and enjoyed a quarter length win to kick off her career.
She is up in class but down in distance than if accepted into Tuesday’s capacity 16-starter Blue Diamond Fillies Preview field.
Co-trainer Lee Freedman has prepared three former Blue Diamond Stakes winners most recently Alinghi (2004) and will be hoping to see progression from Extra Olives on way to the lucrative feature this autumn.
Extra Olives is also one of the shortest-priced fillies nominated for the Blue Diamond Preview in futures Blue Diamond Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $26.
Two other Blue Diamond Preview Fillies nominees are also at $26 in the current all-in Blue Diamond Stakes betting markets with Pearl Congenial and The Seductress.
Local horseman Robert Smerdon won the 1985 Blue Diamond Stakes with Let’s Get Physical and has Gio Point filly Pearl Congenial on the path this season.
She has had two starts for two placings to date both in Melbourne last October.
Her debut was a smart second beaten under a length by Missrock in the Listed Debutant Stakes (1000m) before her third to Dalradian in a restricted Inglis 2YO feature at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day.
She comes into the Blue Diamond Preview on the back of a strong 800m trial at Sandown from January 14 when narrowly beaten by Hussy’s Glow.
Smerdon has a total of three nominees in Tuesday’s Group 3 with Pearl Congenial joined by stablemates Motown Lil who is at $34 in Blue Diamond betting for next month and Vuitton.
Sebring filly Motown Lil ran fourth on Melbourne Cup Day last November on debut behind Concealer in the Group 3 Emirates Airline Plate (1000m) before a last start fifth to Jackson in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) at Sandown-Hillside on November 14.
Vuitton is an unraced daughter of Rothesay and ran fourth in the same trial that Pearl Congenial comes out of.
The Seductress meanwhile is a promising daughter of Snitzel trained at Mornignton by Jason Warren who has won two of her three career starts to date.
Her latest was over the same track and distance as the Blue Diamond Preview she runs in next week when defeating Tokelau by three quarters of a length.
Tokelau, a $34 chance for the 2016 Blue Diamond Stakes, is also nominated for Tuesday’s rematch and is another filly in the line-up for Team Freedman along with Extra Olives.
Other notable hoes include Ciaron Maher’s Merson Cooper Stakes third placed Not A Single Doubt filly Emphatically, last start Flemington winner over the 1000m Want To Rock for Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra and John Sadler’s progressive daughter of Foxwedge La Renarde.
