The countdown is on to the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival’s richest two-year-olds race, the Blue Diamond Stakes 2016, and nominations for the Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Preview running at Caulfield Racecourse on Australia Day are now out.
The sole Group race on the Caulfield card for January 26 is the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies), but the $150,000 Listed Blue Diamond Preview (Colts & Geldings) also run over 1000m is another key lead-up to the $1.5 million Group 1 on February 27.
This season’s Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Preview attracted 18 nominations, eight fewer than the fillies’ equivalent, only six of which have had previous race experience before the black-type sprint.
The shortest priced of the two-year-old colts and geldings in the mix for Tuesday’s clash in futures Blue Diamond Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $17 in the current markets is Power Trip.
Prepared by Mornington’s John McArdle, the Hard Spun gelding has had just the one run to date when narrowly beating Flying Artie to win the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival last November.
There are then three $26 hopes in the all-in Blue Diamond Stakes odds nominated for Tuesday’s Blue Diamond Preview including Bullion Wolf.
Adelaide’s Lloyd Kennewell prepares the son of Stratum who is undefeated having won both of his starts last campaign at Morphettville Parks over 1000m.
Bullion Wolf also won a 1000m trial at the same track by a blistering seven lengths on January 18 ahead of his possible interstate debut on Australia Day where he’ll be looking to retain his undefeated status and continue his Blue Diamond bid.
Kennewell also has his nicely-bred More Than Ready colt Sawaiki nominated for the Blue Diamond Preview after the unraced galloper won a Morphettville Parks trial this week by a runaway five lengths.
The other two possible Preview runners at $26 for the Group 1 win next month are Cohesion and Dalradian.
Godolphin’s head trainer John O’Shea prepares Lonhro colt Cohesion who debuted at Randwick in early October last year running fourth to subsequent Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Capitalist in the Listed Breeders Plate (1000m).
He has won an 800m Sandown-Lakeside trial by over three lengths this month and looks at top hope heading into the Blue Diamond Stakes 2016 for Godolphin who last took out the classic with the Peter Snowden-trained filly Earthquake in 2014.
Dalradian meanwhile is prepared by last spring’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir and has won two of his three starts so far.
He was successful on debut by two lengths over 900m at Bendigo before his narrow Cox Plate Day win in a $250,000 Inglis race at Moonee Valley.
The son of 2009 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reward For Effort suffered his first loss on November 7 when dead last crossing over 10 lengths away seventh to Power Trip in the Maribyrnong Plate on Emirates Stakes Day.
Other notable hopes for Tuesday include the unraced David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Snitzel colt Kafoo and Mick Sell’s Kyneton-trained gelding Moshway who ran third over 1100m at Flemington on January 16.
The full Blue Diamond (C&G) Preview nominations are detailed below with final acceptances closing at 9:00am (AEDT) on Friday morning.
